Dawnstar (PC) review

By lago183 posted 14th March

This game isn't the standard space-sim, it plays more like an action-RPG in space. I bought this thinking it was a pure space-sim, and didn't like it at first, but gave it another chance and loved it.

Pros:

- Great music.

- Pretty interesting characters and story.

- A lot of combat depth once you get a bunch of skills.

- Unlimited loot and progression.

Cons:

- A few random bugs here and there, but nothing gamebreaking.

- Multiplayer is a little buggy if you don't join at the dock.

so promising, but so tempered

the beebop music, the universe, the caraters, mutliplayer... all is sabotaged by the gameplay.

horrible maneuverability, feel nothing when piloting the ships. The ennemis AI is ... there no AI. so frustrating as we believe.

This game sounds cool from the description, and has some neat presentation things - comic book-style cutscenes and music are nice, noir-esque atmosphere also a plus. However when you get down to the actual ship combat, the controls are horrible and confusing and the UI isn't very clear, which meant I've only gotten frustration from this game. Pity, as it has potential.

Dawnstar is a lot more like Diablo or Borderlands in space, and it's a lot of fun. Very satisfying to destroy other ships. It's very action-oriented. If you're looking for a hardcore super-realistic space-sim you might be looking in the wrong place.

I have to say that the game had a somewhat shaky release in terms of bugs, but with all the updates and patches they've fixed any problems I've had. I am glad they are releasing continuous updates based on the forums, which is pretty awesome for a small developer.

I made a gamble and got this game on release, and boy was I disappointed. I have not followed the developement of this game, but because I am a fan of space "simulator" type games I decided to try it out.

Menus are pretty horrible when you first star the game, but because it is a small budget game it is not a big deal. It is, however, a clue of things to come. Also the menu music is this obnoxious blues/jazz tune that will get to your nerves very quickly.

Then you click SOLO and start a new game. Intro scene starts, witch is basically a comic strip with voiceovers. The intro cutscene was kinda nice and voiceovers were decent.

Then you get to the actual game. First off, you dont seem to be able to turn your ship without a joystick, even though you can do everything else without it (shootin, accelerating, rolling etc.) There are some "INPUT" options on the game's launcher when you start it, but they seemed to do nothing. When you finally get your joystic hooked up, you are revealed the true meaning of the game. When you turn your ship, there is not any kind of physics involved. The ship just turns. It's like driving a car and turning a 90 decrees angels without any physical impact on the car and the driver. It feels HORRIBLE. I mean, how on earth are you supposed to play it like this? Is this kind of ship behaviour intentional?

I could not play it any further. If this is intentional, then I'm sorry for the poor review, but this is not my idea of a decent space combat game.
