Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition (Mac) review

By Kamakozei posted 30th March

Dragon age is an epic fantasy RPG. Made by the creators of Mass Effect they have made a deep interesting world. The gameplay is amazing, the voice acting is great and the graphics hold up despite it's age. You will get your money's worth out of this game.

Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition (Mac) review

The game (uncommonly) crashes at inopportune moments, but other than that minor annoyance, it runs fine.

The game itself is excellent. The "main" storyline seems short when you look through the main quests, but there is so much in between to do that I've found myself forgetting what I was even doing for the main storyline. Graphics are great when put on the high settings.

I greatly enjoyed this one. You're thrown into the middle of big, important events and forced into genuinely wrenching decisions at every turn: "Do I tell the truth above all, or tell grieving widow X that person Y is actually alive but hideously transformed? Oh, great, and now Y wants me to mercy-kill them, how do I feel about *that*?" I thought it was a great illustration of the power of interactive storytelling, because you're not just *watching* these things, you're *doing* them: when you make one of these hard choices, you feel responsible.

Now, all that said, you're not really as free as you may feel on the first pass through, and when you go through again you can start to see the seams and see how things are working backstage, but for that first pass, it's an impressive illusion they manage to set up for you, and I think that's well worth the price of admission.

The worst feature of this game is that pesky "Other DRM" mentioned in its description. EA has roped BioWare into an online authentication system that has the potential to go horribly awry and lock legitimate users out of their content: see news stories on the Great Lockout of April '11, where paying customers became unable to access their downloaded content for about five days, due to a server-side error. (Thing is, that also locked you out of your regular game, if you were relying on DLC-gained items, characters, etc.: there were hacks to let you start the game, but all that stuff would be missing, leaving your carefully built party missing members and your main character (potentially) walking around naked because their armour all came from now-unauthorized DLC). When I purchased this Ultimate Edition from GamersGate, in fact, I had to go many rounds with EA Support just to get them to authorize the DLC that was supposed to come with it -- not GG's fault, but still annoying. My advice: keep at it, with EA Support, eventually they will give you what you've paid for (amazing to have to advise people to do this!)

Despite all that, I enjoy the game itself enough to recommend it heartily, and the DLC adds a whole range of new stuff to see and do. Enjoy!
