Dragon Age: Origins Digital Deluxe Edition Mac review

One of the best RPGs i've played. I played kotor 1 and 2 a few years back and more recently mass effect 1 and 2 and Dragon Age: Origins is just as good, if not better. The graphics are superb, the voice acting is great (although i liked mass effects voice acting better because you could actually hear your character speaking), and the gameplay is addicting. Overall, i would recommend this game to anyone who likes RPGs.

Dragon Age: Origins Digital Deluxe Edition Mac review

I've been playing Dragon Age on my MacBook for a few weeks now, and though I hear the PC version is far superior (i.e. due to more official DLC, less bugs & glitches, and backed by a strong mod community), the game itself is still a deeply immersive and entertaining role-playing experience; one that only BioWare could manufacture.

Let me first preface by saying: if you've played a BioWare RPG, you've played Dragon Age. The combat is KOTOR, except instead of taking place in Star Wars, you've landed in Dungeons & Dragons. You control a character whom you create from the ground up (race, gender, class, face, body, etc.) and quest off into a fantasy realm, all the while affecting the world and people around you by the choices you make.

Though I've played this game before it feels like, DA:O still manages to be fresh enough for me to keep playing, despite already having logged in over 50 hours of gameplay (and no real end in sight). The last RPG I played to this extent was Final Fantasy X and that was a couple years ago. The graphics are certainly good enough and can be made quite pretty once set to the max (though whether your computer can handle it is up in the air), combat is turn-based with the illusion of real-time (think KOTOR, as I've mentioned before), the controls are spot-on (this game was MEANT to be played with a keyboard and mouse), and most important of all, the story/stories is/are crazy interesting. You just get lost in Ferelden. I say "stories" because far from following the linear main story arc, there is always an abundant amount of storytelling going on all around you (in addition to all the codexes you find lying around, there are apparently 9 novels worth of spoken dialog in the game). You can choose to learn about the rich history of this world (masterly crafted by the Stephen Kings at BioWare), learn about and help some poor peasant in a side quest, or develop actual relationships with the party members you recruit and watch as they divulge their sordid pasts to you, giving you a clearer picture of the individual that they are (everyone is so unique) as well as causing you to care more about these fleshed out fake people.

BioWare did an amazing job with Dragon Age, though if I'm going to nitpick, I'm going to have to say the AI sure could use some work. With DA:O, the developers have actually incorporated a Tactics menu for each party member, essentially letting you program their AI to fit your play-style or respond appropriately to a certain situation. This, however, does not stop your party members from behaving like children on a short bus now and again, and they can be incredibly frustrating... ("NO, YOU DUMB BITCH! IF I WANTED YOU TO RUN HEAD FIRST INTO THAT BALL OF FIRE I WOULD HAVE CLICKED THAT!!!") You get the idea. That aside, I'm still very much loving the game, and if you're a fan of BioWare or RPGs in general, you're not going to want to miss this one.

Dragon Age: Origins is simply one of the most amazing RPG/Adventure games I have ever played. With over 100 hours of gameplay to it, the several different origin stories and character options, this game has so much replay value to it.

The artwork, landscaping, 3d-modeling and texturing are brilliant. The voice acting is superb. Kate Mulgrew as the voice of Flemeth! I thought I was going to die.

This is a great game for anyone interested in an absolutely awesome RPG Adventure, and now that its released on the Mac, its gaming audience has expanded to a whole new group of people.
