Dragon Age: Origins Awakening (Mac) review

Avadon is a great classically-styled RPG. You choose from one of four classes (rogue, warrior, mage, druid), decide on a name and start you adventure at the Black Fortress. Which class you choose does not matter a whole lot, as the four classes make up the classes of the teammates you can choose later in the game (something I see as a sort of weak link in the game, as it takes away from the individuality of these NPCs). You end up on a rather long adventure with full of great story telling and sometimes funny humor. If you like classic Bioware games and what not, then you will probably enjoy this game.

Awakening is a fun, if not spectacular, addition to Dragon Age: Origins. The characters, while still interesting, are less involving than their counterparts in Origins and the story lacks the epic feeling that was threaded through the many choices in origins as well. However, what it does add is still plenty enjoyable, and in particular the turn based battle system returns to full enjoyment. Good addition.

Im a huge fan of Origins and was really looking forward to continuing the story. Awakening is good, not great, it tends to feel like it was rushed in some areas. Combat is still the same, but communication with your party is very thin, there is no longer a camp to fraternize in and communication seems scripted and limited. There are moments where the game will lag due to massive amounts of characters on the field but thats to be expected. Other then that the story is great, as is customizing armor and weapons with runes, those who though Origins was a masterpiece will enjoy returning as your favorite warden.

I've played it on my souped-up PC and was a little nervous about the quality of the cider porting. The good news is that I can't tell the difference in gameplay whatsoever. It is seamless. Mac gaming is finally coming into it's own.
