Dragon Age 2 (Mac) review

By Maquisard007 posted 28th December 2011

The game is a disappointment for several reasons:

1. New combat mechanics (especially for mages)

2. No room for hybrid classes (like arcane warrior)

3. Easy conversation choices (just look for the proper icon)

4. Very few interesting things to loot.

The game, of course, has some improvements over the first part:

1. Good crafting system

2. Better combat graphic and animations

3. Convenient auto loot button

4. Interesting quests.

In general, the game is not recommended for those, who liked the DA:O, but will be highly appreciated and praised by newcomers to the DA universe.

I think that this game was great, and good fun overall,It just gave me a feeling of lost potential.

Good-

-Unique take on story. The framed narrative and emphasis on a hero that isn't out to save the world make it stand out from other RPGs.

-Darker tone, since decisions don't always come down to good vs evil like in other Bioware titles.

-Distinctive classes and animations in combat. Rogues feel quick and agile, etc.

-Combat is fun, though it can be repetitious. The variety of skills and cross-class combos help alleviate repetition.

-Dialogue wheel affects character personality somewhat.

-Some side quests are interesting.

Bad-

-Since they were focusing on just one city, they should have taken more time to flesh it out, make it a character of its own, so to speak. I didn't get the feeling that I was in a thriving, important free city. Instead it was somewhat dead, sparsely populated with characters that you can't even talk to. (Except the plot/quest relevant ones)

-Combat was faster than Origins, but many of the fights felt meaningless, since every single situation leads into fighting, bar a few exceptions using dialogue. Enemies will jump out of nowhere, making strategic use of warriors and mages nearly impossible.

-The party members aren't all that interesting, and their conversations are short. Varric is a notable exception, though his conversations are still short.

-Some side quests feel like filler: Go to place, kill bad guys, repeat.

-Your choices do little to affect the overarching plot.

Overall: I'd recommend this to fans of Dragon Age or Bioware RPGs, especially fans of Mass Effect.
