Piece of gaming history.

By Fred_DM posted 9th January

Daikatana is possibly the most famous PC game of all time. Not due to its questionable quality but because of its troubled production history. Planned as the most ambitious first-person shooter of its time, developer legend John Romero (ex id Software, inventor of the deathmatch) promised way more than he could deliver. Daikatana was shipped unfinished, notoriously buggy and amidst a marketing disaster. The game turned out to be a huge flop and pretty much cost Romero his career.

For such a huge commercial fail, the game is surprisingly good, though. It helps if you don't expect too much but there are some genuinely good ideas in the game such as the different time periods you play in and the fact that each period features different enemies and weapons. Gameplay is solid and the Quake II engine guarantees that the game sill runs fine on modern systems (tested on W7x64).

Don't hesitate to pick up this piece of PC gaming history and see for yourself what the controversy was all about.

Game it self is fantastic! Classic FPS with vibrant colors, really sets it apart from modern day FPS. Now the game itself has a couple of quirks, first it patching it properly, after you are done with that, the game is playable. Now the only complain I have is the dumb AI of your partners, they can get killed by a door, yes KILLED BY A DOOR, but it's really due to the Quake 2 engine which this game clearly uses, I mean you have to give them credit, they built an AI with the engine you have to give em some credit. Overall, if you can over look, the couple of quirks you'll see that this a gem of game.

Do you want to be John Romero's bitch?

Straight to the bottom line:

Daikatana is quite good, solid at least, if you take it for what it is: hard-core, old-school challenge, essentially a first-person 'I Wanna To Be The Guy', 'Super Meat Boy', e.t.c.

Anyone thinking to buy this should definitely play the demo and, maybe, watch some gameplay videos first.

Graphics are on par with a Playstation one game but actual game play has the crude and unforgiving clunky difficult level of an 8-bit NES title. I know that sound like I'm slagging it but it is the retro challenge that kept my attention and made this eye sore worth cursing at and flipping off over and over again.

Seeing as some of you came from the 'no-save Blaster Master' days and still love ol' BM despite how many times you made it inches from the end only to die and toss four hours of your life out the window, you might actually be relieved that there are at least check points and a save option in this title.

Ten is a fair price and if you're finding this now on sale for five or less I'd have to encourage taking the gamble and trying it out but if you're reading my review during a quirky GG pricing period - I'd look to your other options if this is priced any where over ten.

This game is a classic, I don't care what the reviews said - I enjoyed it. The first world is about the worst part of the game and that is what killed it for most people. Persevere and you will see the better game that is underneath.

Now, on to the Patching problems and widescreen solutions.

You will note that the 1.2 patch will not apply to the GG version due to the drm-free exe. A simple solution is available on John Romero's site (creator of Daikatana) that solves the issue. Download the original exe from here

http://rome.ro/smf/index.php/topic,3782.0.html

(DI-MeisterM - post #2) and replace the exe in the GG install folder. Apply the patch from here

http://www.fileplanet.com/47141/40000/fileinfo/Daikatana-v1.0---v1.2-Patch

and you are updated - No protection in 1.2.

The widescreen problem can be solved through Hex editing the exe. Solution here

now go enjoy this classic that works perfectly in Windows 7 x64!
