Daemonica

Rating: 3.6 (34 votes cast)

Daemonica is an exciting 3D interactive mystery set in medieval England. Take on the role of Nicholas Farepoynt, an investigator who can talk to the Dead. You will explore the dark surroundings of the slowly dying city of Cavorn, talk to both the living and dead to gather information, punish the deserved, collect herbs to make potions and enhance your senses and slowly discover what role you will play in all of this. As you strive to solve the murder of a young girl, more dead appear and the town starts to slip into insanity.

A grim, long-forgotten secret, something that should never see the light of day, again slowly awakes...

Daemonica: The language of demons, the language that the oldest of them used to create the world. At that time, simply whispering its words they caused mountains to grow and stars to shine. Rivers began to flow and trees were wrapped with leaves. Birds were given their voice and beasts their claws. Sun exploded into eternal night; it lit up the earth for the first time and slowly set off on its journey across the sky. All the languages people ever talked in history had originated from the Daemonica itself. Maybe we were to rule the world with the help of it; the language may have been our heritage, a sign of our creation. Whatever it was, the Daemonica is dead today for us.

Only fragments of words have prevailed. Hunters have passed on these fragments of the language to each other and with their help they can get to the borderland between the realms of life and death and communicate with the souls of the murdered.

Daemonica review

This game has a lot of problems, but I still felt it was worth what it cost. (Which was like $3.75 on sale. It wouldn't be worth full price, sadly.)

Daemonica does a lot of things wrong (bad combat, repetitive summoning rituals, tedious alchemy ingredient-hunting), but it's possible to forgive a lot of this because it tries to do a lot of things differently. It's a straightforward character-based story adventure game, but it's also in a weird isometric perspective that you'd usually associate with Diablo, and the alchemy system is interesting (even if it's deeply flawed).

Mostly worth playing because of the weird, interesting features, but not worth full price.

Nice setting and story, sloppy execution

Daemonica sports interesting enough story, though not particularly original. There is however little depth in the characters, a few conversation lines and one or two problems is all that defines them. What really does not help is the fact that nobody in this game really moves or reacts on what's going on. A simple animation is all that you can expect.

The combat in the game is weak, but passable for an adventure game, the special demonic language is a nice twist, and the summoning ritual is repetetive and annoying, as is the alchemy in the game. The ending (there are three, but they branch too late to make a difference) is also sort of bland, so for me, the game does not deliver.

I've played another game by Cinemax called Numen: Contest of Heroes, a bit newer than Daemonica.

To be fair, I was expecting Daemonica to be an rpg, the fact it's instead a point-and-click adventure game took me by surprise.

It still has few rpg elements, like the overall look or the combat and movement system, but the game plays no very different from you normal adventure game, you talk a lot around, gather information, solve puzzles.

I'm not an huge fan of the genre, but I find this game charming. The graphics is quite dated, even compared to Numen, but there's a lot of atmosphere in it.

The story is great, and it's quite original too. Most of the characters you encounter are quite interesting too, even if the dialogue system isn't really advanced. As Numen, this game is a rare pearl, a very ambitious project.

Great building blocks for the series. Daemonica is an adventure rpg in isometric view. The 3D graphics are a bit dated, but give a feel of atmosphere. However, those are not it's strength. The strength of Daemonic lies within the storytelling. The writing was well done by the designers.

You'll care for the victims/residents of this gloomy little town. The story is not far fetched, it's layered with extraordinary circumstances. I didn't feel like the Protagonist lost his human characteristic's he was an imperfect being swallowed by a heavy burden and given a supernatural ability. That will determine his fate. Even as the story progresses so does this character.

Alchemy was quite standard, collect herbs, brew potion etc. Fighting is simply a left click. Give this series a better engine with both isometric and 3rd person view. Continuity of excellent writing this series can easily be one of the best ever.

Daemonica is a somewhat unique isometric adventure game about a medieval investigator (who can talk to the dead through summoning demons) that comes to a small town where some terrible murders have occurred. As you might guess, the point is to solve the crimes. Most of the game involves walking around, picking up items and plants (which you need to make potions and thankfully respawn) and talking to the people of the town.

The voice acting is pretty mediocre, but tolerable. Also, there is a lot of reading, which I personally enjoy but I guess some people don't. The intro story, presented entirely in text, is like 12 pages long, if not more.

There are action sequences, but these aren't too difficult, and the standard adventure puzzles. I personally used a walkthrough after the first chapter because some of the puzzle solutions are less than obvious.

The story itself is pretty interesting, and the murders are pretty brutal. When townspeople go missing or wind up dead you actually feel a little something, which is good.

In the end I enjoyed the game quite a bit and definitely got my money's worth (on sale for 4 dollars, I think). It's too bad more games didn't use this presentation style, controllable isometric view is pretty decent for adventures.

A nice, compact adventure. Very atmospheric and well done. The puzzles are mostly quite logical and overall the game just makes sense.

I have to say this was one of the best games I've played in the sense of "taking you there". It's really refreshing to play a game where just about everything you do seems to actually make sense and connect with the game world.

A little less herb hunting would've improved the game though.

All in all, well worth the money for an adventure-lover.

I've just completed Daemonica a couples of minutes ago and decided to give my impressions of the game while still fresh in memory.

First off, this is an adventure game with a simple click and point interface. The landscape is rendered in full 3D and the camera view can be switched using the arrow buttons on the keyboard or the middle mouse button. View is locked to a ¾ perspective and cannot be modified (no up and down tilt). Graphics are nice and the overall presentation feels polished.

The soundtrack is to my opinion very good and conveys the mood of the story, which is pretty dark and depressing. Voice acting is superb but sadly limited to the main character only. I think that full voice acting for the entire cast would have had been great.

The main great thing about this title is the story which is like I said earlier dark, depressing and engaging. I was nearly glued to my chair for the past few days, wanting to know more. Be aware that there's a large amount of dialog involved and that some of the “puzzles” may leave you scratching your head but don't let this detract you from this great little gem. Almost forgot a small note for the adventure gamers; there's a bit of combat ( Diablo like ) in later acts but all the encounters are very easy and should not give you much trouble. Note that it's not an RPG so do not expect character development of any kind.

Lastly, be sure to read the introduction story and your diary upon starting your journey has lots of information contained within will be of great use.

To conclude, a great game with a great story!
