The powerful sorcerer, Marcus Dominus Ingens became immortal after unraveling the mystery of the ancients. His pride and hunger for power made him eliminate all alchemists whose skills and knowledge equaled his. Now he keeps their souls in Golden Tanks and uses them for his evil purposes and controlling infernal forces. Whole armies of demons and devils are at his command. In order to take control over the world, however, he'd have to destroy the God’s Envoy.

Marcus is aware that he is too weak to destroy the God’s Envoy, so he sets free hordes of infernal monsters in order to harvest human souls. Each new soul makes Marcus more powerful, while the God’s Envoy becomes weaker and weaker. And then one day…

For many years the Mystery Guards Fraternities have trained Hunters to fight the evil. Hard-bitten, well trained in magic and alchemy, they traversed the world fighting against the powers of darkness. Now, their Fraternities need them back to face the whole army of infernal beasts. Well not a bad game. Three achtypes being the mage, range fighter and close quarters fighter. You can customise each class type via a very well thought out skill tree. There is loot, money and monsters. It is a dungeon crawl in the same style as Titan Quest (my favorite of the genre), Diablo etc.

If you have never played Diablo or Titan Quest, then you should try this one out. If you have Diablo or Titan Quest (like me) then I would say...think before you buy. You will not see that many differences between the games.

It's great to find what seems like an under-rated gem, but turns out being one of the most fun games I've played all year. If you like HacknSlashers, like I do, you'll no doubt enjoy this. I rated this one full 5 stars to emphasize its charm and quality that sets it apart in its genre, and I really like it.

The cauldron is a cool device that allows you to upgrade weapons and armour. With it you can transfer certain abilities from one item to another, or strengthen existing equipment. It seems well balanced though, so yeah you can make an uber sword of death, but it will cost you as you raise the damage on it, you also decrease its durability. One can compensate for the ill effects, but it will cost you in gold, equipment, or both.

Huge 'seamless' maps. You travel via the laboratory which serves as an HQ of sorts for your character. There's a short load up when you transverse regions, but otherwise no interruption.

Good graphics and sound, combined with the setting of unique environments of the era portrayed. Makes for some really good atmosphere. (i.e.. Carpathian mountains, the ruined city in Ethiopia, etc). No, they are not Fallout3 quality visuals, but the effects are good such as the actions of the guns, and magic. Khan for example, a Chinese melee warrior character has some neat martial animations with various weapons. The artwork is original and very well done. Some voice acting though is quite poor.

Items drops are random, as they are at the vendors. There is a nice feature that allows you to reserve an item for later purchase should you be unable to afford or use the item at the time.

Two different types of creatures to aid you in your adventure if you choose, and powerful demons later. Other than that, in different parts of the game, npcs of varying number temporarily join you. They can make a big difference depending on your play style as the game can be quite challenging sometimes.

Speaking of challenge, healing/mana potions are available, but they don't spam drop like in most games. Also, some monsters are very tough, nocturnal creatures get huge buffs at night. Gold dosen't rain from the sky either, spend wisely. Mana and health regenerate, but unless you invest in it, your going to be waiting. Its challenging in all aspects I found, but it makes it that much more rewarding.

There's many skills to choose from, most are passive which I'm actually quite fond of. If you like button mashing and having to assign 40 skills each to a hotkey, check out the nearest MMORPG. Those who use magic will have to assign some quick keys to spells, but for the most part you can just focus on the action, not your keyboard or button bar.

Its a Diablo clone that adds its own style and innovative features. After 40 hours of playing I'm still having a blast with it.

I highly recommended it to anyone even remotely interested.

just another diablo clone?

By rosienski posted 31st Aug 2011

pretty much yes. HOWEVER its also pretty good. the controls, unlike other crappy diablo clones are pretty decent. you can set it up so WADS controls the camera and you can move around with the mouse. After a while it can feel more like a thirdperson shooter, sorta, i guess. well maybe not at all but it controls alright. the graphics arnt too bad given the time it was developed and the weapons have a decent amount of feedback. gameplay is pretty straight forward. you click on monsters till they die. then click on some more monsters. click on some gold. click on some loot. using guns adds an interesting amount of variety to the genre. double barreled shotguns have two rounds before you need to reload. rifles have good range and pistols are for up close but fire rapidly. maybe its not revolutionary but it is entertaining. so theres that at least

This game has been one of my best "scores" from GamersGate. You know the drill, you find a bunch of games on sale, pick one or two and cross your fingers. This one and Steam Slug were both grabbed in such sales, and while I can say Steam Slug was a mammoth disappointment, The Chosen completely made up for it. It has quite a bit of polish, and a great Gothic style to it. The challenge is spot on, and the little mechanics like summoning the Golem and collecting teams of henchmen add a nice flavor to the gameplay as well. I have purchased a nice little stash of games from this site so far, and I think at this point that I would have to say The Chosen has been the best so far - it is very enjoyable and well worth your time!

The Chosen - Well of Souls review

The Chosen, well of Souls

Seeing the demo video you won´t expect too much. But reading the quite good reviews here encouraged me to give the demo a try, at least. And I bought it.
Having already liked Space Hack, also from Meridian, Chosen follows an equal path. At least for the controls, which can be also quite awkward at first. Even more than in Space Hack. In Chosen you need not only to rotate the view but you also need to adjust the height of the viewing angle permanently. This holds quite lot of confusion until you get used to it. Though buildings and architecture become transparent, when blocking the view and the camera zooms nicely in a narrow passageway, corner etc, trees and such do not, blocking the view. Esp. trees become easy deathtraps, since these are a good place for enemies to hide. So be very careful, where you move. I have to admit this ´feature´ adds a nice momentum of tension to the game. If this is intentionally by design, I doubt, though.

Unlike in Space Hack, you can adjust the keyboard setting and you will spent some time to find a good key combination to make the controls fluid. Beside of that the control scheme is the one click interface, used by many games in the Action-RPG genre. And still I see no reason why you are not able to MOVE & SHOOT at the same time. But you cannot.
Besides of that the game mechanics are solid and you won´t get stuck in the scenery.

Speaking of which. Werewolves and Vampires are nothing new in RPG settings and so are the locations. Taking place at the end of the 19th century, I expected a bit more originality. There´s nothing that you have not seen before, neither in the story nor in the actual locations. It does a good job to keep yourself entertained, even if the action is somewhat repetitive.

The voice acting is more ambitious than professional but the the overall tone of is quite enjoyable.

There is not much going for Chosen, in the face of Magicka, Torchlight or Titan, though. But if you have a thing for budget titles that not need not excel in every way, like the mentioned Space Hack, you can have a quite some fun though. You might give it a try, if you find it on a bargain.

This is a very nice hack an slash game, where you can choose 4 characters with each unique abilities. This is best described as an blend of diablo and titan quest.

It is owerall a well done game

I was really suprised by the quality of this game. The developer of this game is from my home country (Poland) and never even heard about this game - which is unusual, because there are not that many professional game development shops in Poland :)

In any case - the game is fun to play, and for a Hack and Slash fanatic it is a must. A much better title then Harbringer or Restricted Area.

It is only slightly less polished than big titles like Titan Quest or Diablo 2: the gameplay itself is superb, however with the voice-over and cinematics you can see that this 5 people game studio run out of funding.

The written dialog could be a little better edited as well - too much text - but than again - who plays H&S RPG for detailed story? ;)

Much Much better than I thought for a bargain title...Great graphics ..runs on low end systems...challenging game play!
