Earth, 2019. A team of US scientists makes a frightening discovery on an island in the South China Sea. All contact with the team is lost when the North Korean Government quickly seals off the area. The United States responds by dispatching an elite team of Delta Force Operators to recon the situation. As tension rises between the two nations, a massive alien ship reveals itself in the middle of the island. The ship generates an immense force sphere that freezes a vast portion of the island and drastically alters the global weather system. Now the US and North Korea must join forces to battle the alien menace. With hope rapidly fading, you must fight epic battles through tropical jungle, frozen landscapes, and finally into the heart of the alien ship itself for the ultimate Zero G showdown.

Crysis review

Amazing game at its first release. The first title in the famous franchise. And people always compare it to FarCry, halflife and Doom. And is frequently used as a 3D game performance benchmark at least at that year. Not super gory but with a little bit more SCIFI flavor. So if you are a big SciFi FPS fan, do not miss this title.

Crysis review

By reddavinci posted 31st January

Crysis was the subject of seemingly unending hype a few years ago, and the cover art was plastered in every game store everywhere. Expecting a mediocre run-and-gun FPS like Battlefield: Call of Honor, I waited for the price to drop... and it only took 4 years! For starters, the game wouldn't run because of incompatibility with Windows 8. This is apparently a copy protection issue but I (eventually) found a workaround. The game starts out as a Korean killing simulator with generic-as-hell weapons such as the "precision rifle" and the "shotgun". Some weapons have different firing modes and you can swap attachments for guns (e.g. scopes, silencers) after you take them off guns you find. Fortunately, the game spices things up with a "nano suit", which is a very poorly-designed super-duper-ninja suit in that it only has enough battery to power one 'ability' at a time, and only for a very short duration. Luckily, it charges quickly as well, so the skilled player must switch modes and find cover frequently to survive. The game at first looks like a non-linear exploration type game like Far Cry (even has a huge Jungle map to boot) but it becomes clear that you get very few optional objectives, and they're almost always along the way to your primary objective. The driving mechanics are a bit odd and vehicles generally have fewer hit points than I expected from playing the Battlefield series. On a number of occasions, hitting a small obstacle at low speed made my jeeps and trucks explode like a nuclear bomb on wheels. The choice of vehicles is limited and generic but they all have nitro boosters for some reason. They are not nearly as fun to drive like in other FPS games like Arma or, of course, Battlefield because they're just not flexible enough. The worst part of this entire game, though, is the fact that every scene absolutely-positively-and-with-no-argument MUST be completed in the precise way the level designers made it. For example, new paths open only after going to specific dead ends or killing a certain number of enemies. There are certain parts of the game in which you have absolutely no indication of where to go, making the latter even worse. If you have any intuition as a gamer, scrap it. The things a gamer expects to work to get to the next passage never do, and often cause you to die. And if you die after the direction is revealed, after loading you STILL have to go back to those dead ends and wait for the same scripted events to happen for the path to be open. The worst was when you knew which parts of the final boss to target and destroyed them before the scripted dialogue -- only to have them regenerate for you to destroy again when the scripted event is over. In short, this game is overly scripted and you get virtually no choice. During "team combat" scenes, it's clear that only some enemies are supposed to be killed by you, and the rest by the AI. In other cases, enemies spawn infinitely, making most of the game an exercise in running past enemies or cloaking while they're shooting at you (which hilariously confuses them.) The graphics are pretty nice (especially later on) but the engine is horrendously inefficient, and you will lose frames massively despite this game being 4 years old already, even on medium settings. After spending most of the time dying for FOOLISHLY playing as though you had any freedom, and not did exactly what the level designers want, the game is actually pretty short. It's a shame, too, since they obviously worked very hard on designing the graphics for the later stages. There's absolutely no incentive to explore, except to get a bit of ammo -- and in many missions you lose the previous guns you had worked so hard to find only to start with a pistol. Overall, I'd give this game a 3/5 because it's obviously more creative and interesting than the same crappy recycled Call of Honor campaigns we've suffered through for half a decade, but at the same time, you have to do a lot of boring and frustrating experimentation to see how particular parts are SUPPOSED to be finished, not how they COULD HAVE been finished had the level designers not been so narrow-minded.

A decent but overhyped shooter. Not many people probably agree with me, but I actually preferred the second game, somehow it seemed more varied and interesting.

Inetersting FPS

Personally I found this to be a great game. I wish that I could have one of those suits. Beat it on the hardest difficulty. The concept of choosing different buffs from the suit made the game quite unique. It is still easy enough to play through as a normal FPS game without needing worry about the suit's settings. Plenty of ammo can be found and the weapon customization made playing with weapon settings worthwhile.

Overall, a great-looking game with great pacing story-wise. There were rare spots when I felt like the boredom set it, but then again, you're basically set free on a huge island, so waddaya gonna do?

Only thing I would quibble about: awkward controls on PC. Felt much more at home with a controller hooked up. But maybe that's just my preference.

If you have a beast of a machine capable of running this extremely computer-taxing game this is one hell of a game! My new set-up allows me to play Crysis with all settings set to Very High no problem, so my personal experience may vary from others'. However, with that said, the graphics are absolutely amazing. Can't say I've really seen anything like it, along with the high definition texture mods I've downloaded for it.

The story is so-so, and the controls (suit controls) are a bit difficult to master, but once they're mastered, that's when it gets really fun.

I definitely recommend this game to any FPS fan.

Not what I was expecting

Great graphics but that is about it. The gameplay seemed like your usual FPS fare. Seems like I just go between armor and stealth with the others being a death sentence to use in middle of combat. Enemies take forever to die.

Simply amazing. One of the best FPS campaigns I have ever played. I suggest to play with the suit shortcuts enabled and once you mater them you will truly feel like a future super soldier.

The story is ok but the execution is awesome. You are simply given where your objective is and then you are free to execute it however you choose. There wasn't a single time during game play that I had to reload because I thought I did something wrong. It really feels like an action movie.

Of course the graphics are amazing and well optimized. I don't have a powerhouse computer and was still able to play it on medium settings with only a few hiccups. Even at the lowest setting Crysis looks awesome.

I have a long history of FPS gaming, starting out with the original Doom (I played the alpha version, crazy enough) and going all the way to modern shooters. Keeping that in mind, for me, Crysis did everything right: excellent graphics, a compelling storyline, innovative gameplay, and aliens of course. The nanosuit adds another layer of strategy to the game--do you cloak yourself and sneak past enemies, or engage armor and blast them head on? My only gripe about Crysis is that it was a little short and definitely a system-crusher, so make sure you have a PC that can handle it.

Past all the hype, Crysis is a solid first person shooter with some action strategy elements and excellent graphics. Issues I encountered were poor gamepad support and enemy soldiers taking way too many hits before going down. Despite the lush environments the game is in no way a realistic shooter. Everything about it is very fantasy/sci-fi oriented and has an almost dreamy feel. All in all I wouldn't pay more than $20 for this game, but if you can get it for that it's worth it. Also, for the record the version of Crysis available here on GamersGate contains neither the 64bit version or the Sandbox2 editor.
