Call of Atlantis review

By ellarunciter posted 10th November 2010

I like this game a lot. The game is basically a mixture of a match 3 game and hidden object. So this game is a casual puzzle game, basically.

In the game, you go around ancient civilisations to find crystals of Poseidon, which he has hidden from mankind (I think) because of their ignorance and greed. The object of the game is to go around collecting these crystals through completing 8 levels of match 3 and 2 levels of hidden object and then move onto the next level.

Each level starts off fairly easy, and as the level progresses, the match 3 puzzles get harder, with tiles blocking the way of the pieces of items you need to collect to use in the last level. During these later levels, you really have to think on your feet, as all match 3 levels (but not hidden object) are timed. Sometimes you have to go back and try a level again through not thinking or being able to actuate a strategy in time. This can lead to some temporary frustration for the player, especially if they lose all their lives on one level.

You have 3 lives but can get more by earning 100,000 points or more when completing a level. If you lose all your lives through several attempts at a level, you have to go back to the beginning of the level. This is annoying, but actually makes it easier for you to build up to the harder, later levels of that level.

Overall, the music is pleasant to listen to throughout and the art and scenery is also nice to look at. You can actually set the art in each level as a screensaver after you unlock the levels.

I don't think this game is really for the beginning casual player, as the time restraints and need to develop a strategy and actuate it in a certain amount of time may stress some players who don't like or are not used to time puzzles. Throughout the game there are little abilities that you can collect on the game screen to make your life easier within the level, so it's not all bad.

All in all, I would recommend this game to anyone who likes match 3 or is a seasoned casual player. I would not recommend it as a person's first casual game as it may be a little tricky and not as easy as some of the other casual titles out there. But I really enjoy this game a lot.
