Culpa Innata

Rating: 4.2 (29 votes cast)

The year is 2047. It is the golden age in mankind's evolution. For the first time in history, countries with significant resources have united under one World Union. In this utopian society, "survival of the fittest" takes its next inevitable step. Only the elite are deemed worthy to live under the World Union banner - the smartest, healthiest, and wealthiest. Forsaking the altruistic tendencies that have crippled individual development and economic progress in the past, the World Union has ushered in an unprecedented era of self-interest and fulfillment. Prosperity is a science, sex is entertainment, disease and capital crime are non-existent, and the future has never looked better.

But beneath a perfect world lies an unspeakable truth -- A truth that is ready to surface! A World Union citizen is murdered in Russia, one of the few remaining Rogue States. This murder oddly coincides with the accidental death of a prominent professor in Adrianopolis, an important border town between the World Union and Russia. Peace Officer Phoenix Wallis is assigned to lead the investigation of the murder. Still young and inexperienced, she will soon make discoveries beyond her wildest imagination, as skilled hackers and subversive characters begin taking an inexplicable interest in Phoenix. Her investigation reveals enigmatic clues that lead her deeper and deeper into a mystery that challenges not only her case, but her very beliefs in the worldview she has sworn to protect.

This story-driven, third-person game uses a 3D engine with dynamic cameras and other technologies developed by Momentum AS. Their remarkable patented facial animation technology is put to excellent use, as the game features over fifty personable characters that you’ll frequently engage in dialogue throughout your investigation. Using the classic mouse in a point and click interface, players have responded enthusiastically to the intuitive and responsive control. The game features a wide variety of organic obstacles ranging from logic puzzles to hi-tech gadget manipulation to dialogue and inventory challenges.

With its non-linear styled gameplay, optional activities and dialogue choices, branching paths, and even multiple endings, Culpa Innata offers plenty of replay value. The game is crisply paced with much to discover, yet still allows each player to explore at their leisure.

Solid adventure game. The story keeps you interested and the gameplay is pretty good. The puzzles tend to be fair and, with a couple of exceptions, not too hard. The plot moves nicely and the writing is generally bearable. If you like SF and adventure games this is a recommended choice if not, well, this game won't change your mind.

Culpa Innata is very plot driven adventure game, with main emphasis on the plot telling more than with the puzzles.

The game takes a place in an era of New World Order. The government provides everything to the people and the Global Peace and Security Network takes care of their security and keep the threats out from their lives.

Phoenix Wallis is a young GPSN officer, who is given a task of solving a murder of new World Union citizen. This take the her through many conversations as some puzzles until the truth is revealed.

Most of the game play is to go from place A to place B to question various people. You have limited time a day to spend with any given person and the game has a night and day cycle. At day you investigate and at night you can go clubbing or to dine with your friends. At points you need to report your success to your superiors and you can request people to be arrested. There's also a couple of side missions to interview new, potential citizens for New World Union.

The game play is a bit of a hit and miss. At times you get a puzzle or two, but at times you just run around the city to question people. Then time runs out and you have to stop working and go out with friends or what ever you might want to do at evenings. The plot is, luckily, interesting enough to get you through, but the game does feel a bit too unbalanced and it has some design flaws.

Voice acting is pretty solid through the game, which is good in such a dialog heavy game. The music is okay, not ground shattering but not annoying either. The graphics aren't the greatest either, but they do provide a good view of the world of tomorrow.

This Point & Click adventure is based on Turkish sci-fi author Alev Alati's Schrodinger's Cat novels. And rather you follow an innovative investigative experience than, the usual "find objects and combine"-mechanics found in other adventures. So talking to NPCs and finding clues (in the not Scoobie Doo-way) is important here. This also means lots of dialogue trees, that are really entertaining, at most times. And the Puzzle are mostly logical either.

There are a few lows. Skipping Dialogue-scenes,skips right to the end. So be careful. And some puzzles are... off. Backgrounds could be more nice but really do the job. And finally, this Adventure does not brake new ground in reinventing the genre or delivering something you have never seen before, somewhere else, including some well known cliches.

But what is presented and how it works together is very good engineered. Which brings us to...

The definitive upsides:

These are the atmosphere and the immersion of the world the game presents, along with the characterization of the main characters and the NPCs.

And yes, also the mature content is kept hot and sizzling in a mature way. This is not just for the M-rating but actually is part of the story. And I totally dig that!
