Rating: 3.6 (69 votes cast)

Mars, 2044. The UN establishes MARSCORP (Martian Security and Economics Committee) under the leadership of Samuel Longwood. In the years that follow, the UN gradually loses control of MARSCORP, mainly due to the non-transparent licence policy of its director. Longwood uses his autonomous status to create vassal relations between the corporations and MARSCORP. The unshakable power position of MARSCORP is supported by the companies and thus they acquire additional rights and licenses. Longwood and his consortium become extremely wealthy from this arrangement. However, dissenting voices in MARSCORP begin to challenge Samuel Longwood's authoritarian policy. They demand his dismissal as director and a complete redistribution of the mining rights.

But Samuel Longwood keeps an ace up his sleeve for occasions like this…

Chaser awakens on board the spaceship H.M.S. Majestic. He doesn't know who he is, what he's doing here, why he is being sought by men in black uniforms and what they will do to him when they find him…

The player's goal is to find out who Chaser really is and why he is being hunted. The story leads the player from the H.M.S. Majestic to Montack City on Earth, then on to Siberia and finally to Mars, where the trail ends and hopefully the truth can be found.

cant believe they would sell such a good game this cheap, excellent first person shooter, good graphics for its age, not recommended for a novice player, theirs more run and take cover, than your average first person shooter

Not really worth your time

Not really worth your time, even if you got it free. It's extremely dated by its graphics and gameplay, without having a particularly good story. Give it a pass unless you really like old-school shooters.

Blue Coins=Chaser!

Bought with Blue Coins. Must pleased!

Yeah, it's an oldie. But it runs very well own my Windows 7/64-bit machine. Can't beat that. I've played newer games, like Alpha Prime, that aren't as much fun as Chaser. The challenge is extremely high. Some complain about the unfairness of the AI...I can't argue with that. You have to be on your toes! Most people are just missing an enemy that's partially hidden from view while he's unloading shots in you.

Don't have really high expectations and you can't go wrong with Chaser. A good way to use your Blue Coins. ;)

Run of the mill sums this up pretty much. The story is so-so, you're the classic "bad-boy" with a an unknown past. Sadly it plagued with some issues. On the first mission I fell through a floor and later was killed by a sliding door closing, and no it wasn't a "plot" door but just a normal door, I just stood in the wrong spot and as Berry Burton would put it was made into a Jill sandwich. Even through the game isn't at all like it Doom 3 comes into mind with the whole "THIS IS SPACE. MARS IS EPIC!" vibe thing. All and all, die hard FPS'er would probably get some joy out of it but for other gamer, I'd say skip it or wait until a super sale.

Surprisingly Good, So Much Action, The Action Chases You!

By sorrowhawker posted 2nd November 2011

Chaser is easily one of the most under-rated FPS games on the market. There are plenty of run-and-gun "kill the baddies" FPS games out there. Chaser is like those, but with a few tricks up its sleeve.

The game has a good story and feel to it. The soundtrack is very good, reminding me of something out of Deus Ex or System Shock at times but better and well-suited for its own style of FPS. The songs are very catchy, very memorable which is a huge plus. The developers give the player alot of in-game cutscenes to tell the story. They take their time, they throw a lot into it, some cutscenes last a few minutes or so. It's very welcomed when the developers show respect for their own story.

Here is a breakdown of the game.

The GOOD:

-Promising story with unexpected surprises, satisfying cutscenes that tell the story

-Massive levels, utterly huge

-Well varied levels, you really don't know where you are going to go next, and they do a great job of trying to diversify the locations. One level has you on a space station falling apart, another in a shootout in an Asian-themed high-rise hotel, another in a base on Mars, for example.

-Awesome, large arsenal of weapons. There are a TON of weapons in this game. They all sound and handle well, better than many FPS, each weapon has a special mode or two. I was particularly pleased with the vast selection and the ways the weapon sound effects were

-Decent graphics for an FPS of its age

The BAD:

-Some of the levels feel too big, and in some, you might get lost for a moment trying to figure out which way to go. Some also feel a bit boring after they start looking all the same or repetitive.

-As you get closer to the end of the game, it gets increasingly frustrating with finding your way around, and especially with the "jumping" puzzles. The jumping puzzles are not tough at first but become atrocious to deal with later. At times, you may really have to stand around to determine if you are truly going the right way or not. Additionally, in one of the very last levels, you have one of the worst jumping puzzles of all time you have to do in the "dark". You are almost CERTAIN that you are probably going the wrong way and that there is no way the character can make that jump. Wrong! You are going the right way after numerous tries you should succeed (if you don't give up).

-For all the gunblazing and explosions, the game is low on the blood and gore which I found a bit frustrating. (GOOD: when blood splats against the wall, you will see it slowly streak down). You can't shoot dead enemies on the ground, you can't gib and you can empty a whole clip into them, and the models don't show any damage. This makes the gunplay somewhat less satisfying.

-Almost no interactivity with the world or "physics" in FPS as we come to know it today (GOOD: character animations/movements are good).

Chaser certainly isn't the slickest or most imaginative shooter out there. But despite its surface flaws, Chaser has what ultimately counts the most: a core of exciting, addictive action.

A mediocre shooter harking to days past. It's really one of those games where you feel you've done it all before. It has good controls, reliable weapons and decent enemy AI. If you're a regular to shooters you can probably breeze past on the hardest setting with a few bumps here and there.

In the end you may not get anything out of the game, satisfactory wise, but you will be entertained for a few moments as you play. I'd recommend it as one of those games you play off and on throughout the week or so.

Do you remember the days of Quick Saving after every combat encounter? Do you miss them ? This could be the game for you.

Chaser is a brutal old school FPS with some engaging combat and entertaining set pieces. The action starts right away and really throws hordes of extremely accurate enemies at you. I'm glad they don't re-spawn. The graphics are not too bad for it's age and I was impressed with the animation.

This is a long game by today's shooter standards expect to spend a while with it if it clicks for you.

I don`t have much to add to the previous review. Just that for a low budget title Chaser is a gem. Unlike comparable titles like Alpha Prime or Chrome, where you fight the same guys in the same corridors for nearly the entire game, Chaser boasts with creative level design, environments and puzzles. Also the Weapons are well balanced and you get a whole new set when you get to Mars. The ending is also of no surprise if you are only a little bit brighter than the game´s mediocre A.I. In the end it´s not as fun as Half-Life or similar as a whole experience but nevertheless became one of my underrated games fav.

I had to get confirmation from Gamersgate on their Facebook page before I even considered ordering this game. When it was released in 2003, the game was so shonky that JoWood had to release a patch just so you could install the game at all on Xp - which is quite poor as Xp had by then had 2 years to bed down. I am extremely happy to confirm that this game runs on a proper computer (i.e. not a laptop) running Windows 7 Ultimate, without a single hitch.

But onto the game itself. Chaser, for me and for plenty of others out there if you look around, was and is one of the most underrated FPS in recent years. Don't let the screenshots here put you off - the game does still look good today. Of course it's Cloak NT engine is a little rough around the edges, seeing as it's not 2003 anymore - that's logical in gaming terms. But what simply hasn't dated is the menacing atmosphere, really good sound effects, music, ambience and level design. The AI is not the best, but that isn't enough to detract from this really unique game.

Don't pass it by.

Well, i had good hopes for chaser. Unfortunately it didnt make it past 20minutes before it became practically unplayable. After three miutes (+/-) of play i found myself at a jump puzzle. I tried to make the jump many times before i gave up on that and sought a different solution (assuming i had missed something obvious). After a few more minutes of frustration i resorted to googling a walk-through. The solution was apparently, as i had origionaly thought, the jump puzzle. The walk-through did mention that it was ridiculously hard due to 'being able to jump no higher than your shoelaces'. I went back to the game and spent ages trying to make the jump. I failed...and im not uncoordinated, nor inexperienced at this type of game. In short, unless you are happy to spend a lot of time waiting to get lucky, dont bother.

Chaser certainly has its moments. Near the beginning of the game you see debris flying overhead from the space station you just escaped from impact into the buildings of the city your escape pod crashed into. This is merely the first among a number of set pieces dotted throughout this lengthy game. But it must be said that for all the wheat in Chaser there is much more chaff.

You can't really escape the game's failings as they're thrust upon you throughout the course of the game. Showering the ground with debris might seem like nice attention to detail until you realise that you frequently have to jump to be able to move over the uneven terrain. Even that doesn't help sometimes and you just get stuck. To use ladders your character (more or less) sticks to them and uses either their feet or their forehead to ascend and descend respectively. You then have to hope that you're going to reach your destination and not plummet to your death. Apparently hands aren't required. Which is a shame as I am under the impression that these useful limbs would have saved me a few quick loads.

In short, had the game been cut down to the better, more purposeful levels and the time saved been spent on polish then it could have been a very good game. As it stands it's not a game that has stood the test of time very well at all.

Awesome game. It may be old, but still it's one hell of a good game. The ambiance feels like Deus Ex, if you like cyberpunk this feels somewhat like that. The gameplay though simple is quite effective for some mindless fun. Remind me of counterstrike. The story is great, though the voice acting is very ''lowbudget''. As said in a previous review you will travel through a nice variety of levels which are quite big for some of them. The weapons are somewhat generic but it's still a blast to shoot with them. The ennemies AI is quite basic, stand and shoot, but if youre looking for a next gen game you're definitely not at the good place. All in all for 2.49$ this was a real good find for me.

a Sci-fi FPS with modern weapons and strange story going on

Almost everything in this game is generic for FPS, grab items, kill enemies and proceed to the exit.

Levels have good variety(complete stealth, defense, snipe, submarine combat, etc) but the designs aren't that great and confusing at times, and some levels have bugs and problems(I couldn't go past the Gate level because Valve didn't work at all).

Enemy AI are dumb, but they hurt you VERY much. You'll have to quicksave and load no less than hundred times.

You get Adrenarine Mode(another generic Slo-mo toggles) to deal with those bad guys.

Graphics are above average in my opinion, so are musics. but Voice overs are quite horrible.

Good B-class shooter. just don't expect anything "awesome" but it's enjoyable for hardcore singleplayer fans.

By qrter posted 6th July 2010

This is a strange one. In large parts "Chaser" is as generic as possible - the shooter mechanics are basic, the guns are largely interchangeable, the enemies and their AI aren't much to write home about. The story is utterly incomprehensible - it starts falling apart as soon as it starts.

But then there's also something utterly charming about the game - great expansive levels in very varied environments (the first level has you escaping from a burning space station, another has you climbing through a seemingly abandonded rocketbase, yet another part is in the dustblown environments of Mars), with that particular sense of atmospheric design that you find in Eastern European and Russian games. Seeing where you'll end up next will drive a player to keep going. If you're the kind of player who enjoys exploring environments you might enjoy this game.

Personally I never had much of a problem with the difficulty of the game, and I am nowhere near being a hardcore FPS player.

One piece of advice - stop playing the game before you reach the end. The ending is horrible and unfulfilling, a complete anti-climax, even when you keep in mind how silly the storyline is.

This game runs very well on my Windows 7 netbook, and makes an excellent on-the-go FPS for airports, dentists' offices, etc. The gameplay is excellent, the story is good, without distracting from gunfights, and the whole thing runs very smoothly. There are only two sticking points. The first, which is admittedly minor: the jumping mechanics are awful, and there are a few jumping puzzles here and there. The second: this game is HARD. Fair, but hard. It's meant for people who yawn their way through the top difficulties of standard shooters. If you want an honest challenge to your mouse-and-keyboard skills, this may be a plus. If you're an FPS novice, don't expect to get too far at first, even on easy.
