3 Historical Naval Battles:

  • Cape Rachado

In this setting, the Dutch fleet consists of 11 ships lead by Admiral Cornelis Matelief de Jonge while the Portuguese fleet has 20 ships lead by vice-roy Martim Afonso de Castro. Even though the Dutch lost this battle, it was enough to convince the Sultanate of Johor to support the Dutch in the Dutch-Portuguese War, and eventually end the Portuguese supremacy in the region.
  • 1st Cape Finisterre
The First battle of Cape Finisterre was fought between the British and the French in the year 1747 and was a part of the War of the Austrian Succession. In this setting you’ll find 7 British warships attacking a 15-ship French convoy. The British fleet is commanded by Admiral George Anson while Admiral de la Jonquière is commanding the French fleet. The British victory ensured the promotion of George Anson to Vice Admiral. The French summoned a bigger convoy later, which lost another battle at the Cape Finisterre, leading to the end of French naval operations for the rest of the war.
  • Battle of San Juan de Ulúa
The battle of San Juan de Ulúa was fought between English privateers and Spanish forces in the year 1568. In this setting the English privateers have 5 ships commanded by John Hawkins and the Spanish forces have 3 ships commanded by Francisco Luján. The privateers were anchored at San Juan de Ulúa for repairs and resupply when a Spanish escort fleet arrived in the port. Because of a treaty between the two nations the privateers were not afraid for their safety. However, the privateers had been plundering for a full year and Luján was aware of this and swiftly attacked the privateer fleet. Swift attack and the capture of the island’s bastion ensured the Spanish victory.

Commander: Conquest of the Americas DLC: Colonial Navy review

This is a decent expansion, especially since it's inexpensive. If you like the original, then there's no reason to NOT buy this pack. It adds to the game & gives it more replayability if you still tinker with the original from time-to-time .... or gives you a good reason to start the game back up if it's been idle for a long time.

This is an excellent expansion to an already well rounded game. If you have enjoyed Commander: Conquest of the Americas, then I highly recommend you add this expansion to the game. It offers much more to the substance of the game and is well worth purchasing.

The new campaign features are good to have: you do end up getting some use out of the ships, while the new resources certainly add flavor. They are, in fact, probably my favorite part of the DLC as you don't end up going after the same resources and buildings quite as much as without the DLC. This makes the game a little bit less repetitive.

However, nothing particularly deep is added here. The game mechanics stay the same and the aforementioned changes are minor ones. I can't comment on the historical battles as they're not my cup of tea, but if you like separate battles then they can be factored in.

All in all, I like it but don't feel that the value's there. You should by all means purchase it if money is no concern, but for most people I'd wait for a sale and pick it up.

The new ship types and resources make choices of what to build and where to colonize more interesting. Fans of the game will enjoy the added variety and strategy.

These features came with the game if you preordered it, and now they're available as a separate DLC.

The only resource addition that feels any different is the wheat. If it is refined all the way up to bread, you can only trade it within your colonies in the new world. It spoils if you try to bring it back to Europe. The other two follow the same general "refine this and bring it back to Home Port to get more $$$" pattern

More ships gives you more choices for your fleets, which is always a good thing.

As with the main game, wait for a big sale before picking this DLC up.

The DLC in itself is quite interesting and adds some fine stuff to the game. Yet, you definitely have to wait till it's on sale because 5 USD is not that cheap in my opinion.

At an extremely low price when in sale (which is often), this DLC really provides value for its money... Nice new ships and battles, as well as new resources ! Don't hesitate to get it, you know you want the complete CC experience :)
