Birth of America II - Wars in America

Rating: 3.7 (525 votes cast)

Birth of America II: Wars in America 1750-1815 follows the successful historical strategy videogame Birth of America, AGEOD's American Civil War and Napoleon's Campaigns. It is the long-awaited well-expanded sequel of the acclaimed first game that made AGEOD. You can now fight all the big wars that made America between 1750 and 1815.

Wars in America 1750-1815 is a stand-alone game not compatible with the previous one. It includes:

New Rules

  • New cohesion system (based on the American Civil War/Napoleon’s Campaigns model) and its impact on combat
  • Brand new concept of Engagement Points, allowing options for armaments purchases, political, economic and diplomatic options.
  • In addition, a challenging Foreign Entry competitive engine will allow player to struggle in the race for the French Intervention.
  • New orders (e.g. spiking the guns, surrender with the Honour of War, remove leader, distant unload from ships).
  • New abilities (adapted from those of American Civil War/Napoleon’s Campaigns and new rules here)
  • Different updates and other rules (e.g. combat, Indians, minutemen, blockade, privateers, naval transport, optional limited activation rules, German mercenaries, etc...)

New functionalities

  • New in game Replay module allows to see the turn you played (or any other – exchange them with friends!)
  • Updater module to check if you play with the latest game version.
  • Play-by-email and TCP/IP ARES module
  • Improved AI
  • Multiple resolutions Interface

New data

  • New map: extension of the map up to the Mississippi in the west, blockade and commerce raiding boxes, new European off-map boxes (France, GB, Spain, Holland) or in the Americas (Hudson Bay, Newfoundland, Cuba)
  • Over a hundred new leaders and units.
  • New Scenarios (including at least the following)
Scenarios 1750-1780: Lord Dunmore War,  new FIW 1755-1763 war campaign, Galvez 79
    Scenarios 1780-1800: Fallen Timbers 1791-1794
Scenarios 1812-1815: Great Lakes 1813, Full War of 1812-1815 campaign, New Orleans 1815
New Events (according to scenarios) and wide set of options for you to customize your strategy.
Widely extended manual and player’s aides.
  • New extra in game music from the time, thanks to the performance and support of 3rd US Infantry Regiment and the US Army Fife and Drums Corps.

Current version is 1.01b

A turn-based strategy title, the game's overall style is similar to that of Europa Universalis; focusing more on grand strategy and management over any meaningful form of tactical combat.

The game doesn't seem to perform too well on slightly older machines either. A turn can take a good couple of minutes to calculate, especially in the larger scenarios, and zooming out can cause a bit of lag, forcing you to click-drag yourself across the map.

It's an average game, worth buying on some discount. I still prefer Europa Universalis over Birth of America.

Birth of America II is an AGEOD game. For the initiate, that should be enough. For everyone else, let me tell you what that means -- lots of complexity, lots of historical missions, lots of units, and no real way to understand how to play it. If you've played earlier AGEOD games, it shouldn't be a problem, and you'll find a real gem here. If not, stay away -- buy Pride of Nations or one of their later games, after they got into the stride of proper tutorials and manuals.

Similar in feel to other Paradox grand strategies

This is a very deep and engrossing game, much like Paradox's other grand strategy titles. Although not particularly compelling from a graphical perspective, if you like Paradox's other titles, you will enjoy this one as well.

Summary: More of the same from Paradox. Not a bad thing by any stretch.

Not for shallow youths with the attention span of goldfish.and the intellect of an X Factor contestant. An accurate, complex, demanding but deeply ejoyable recreation of a fascinating era of military history. For all of us fogies out there - young or old.

I don't know why anyone would like games like this. This is like your grandpa's old board wargames and when I say board I really mean BORED. There's just absolutely too much micromanagement in building up and breaking down unit structures. Too many settings to have to muck with on every unit. But, the worst thing is having to wait until the NEXT TURN to find out what happened in each battle the LAST TURN.

Not recommended except to the most diehard of old foggies who want great detail and lots of micromanagement like old board games of the 60's-70's.

A more "serious" wargame, compared to Paradox other grand strategy games. Very tactical, I still haven't got all subtleties but it looks very promising.

Graphically unimpressive but very detailed and deep strategy. Be careful and plan every move with an eye to the future, not for the hasty or impulsive. Still a good game for history strat buffs.

One of the best AIs in grand strategy games. If you like games like EU III or victoria, tyou should give this game a try. There are some performance issues and bugs, but it happens with the majority of grand strategy games. Obviously, if you don't like the period or setting (american civil war) don't waste time here...

Deep, complex, steep learning curve to anyone not into strategy games. fun but little action, more planing and tactics then action.

This game is not very good due to the horrible AI and interface. No matter how much you try, you'll never win as the Americans, atleast I can't. I don't recommend this game, not worth the money :(

This game plays very much like the other AGEOD wargames; it functions as a complex, in-depth table-top wargame, but with pretty hand-drawn graphics. BoA2 builds upon its predecessor with an expanded timeline and additional scenarios, and it's a worthwhile purchase for those interested in the time period or in detailed wargames. Those who find other Paradox games like Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, or Victoria too complicated will probably be lost and frustrated by this title, but those who don't mind micromanagement and a very high learning curve will enjoy this solid game.

A good game from paradox however lacks on some aspects compared to other paradox games. If you are interested in this time period then you will really enjoy the game

I had recieved this game free as a part of a promotion that paradox was doing, but would of gladly have paid for it. It's a game that's in the same style as the europa titles with it's own unique twists set in an interesting time period, would recommend if you're into similar style games.

Similar to other Paradox games, recommended if you enjoy grand strategy or boardgames rather than graphics and sound. Birth of America will have you slowly conquering America one state at a time while thinking about just how far you can stretch your resources. Careful thinkers and planners only.

This is an expanded version of the original BoA game, with more units and generals, bigger map and some new game engine features incorporated from Napoleon's Campaign, which was released after the original BoA. Overall is not such a big overhaul as to make it a must, but I would recomend it if you like Ageod games and feel like enjoying some Independence War action.

This is for the hard-core army game player. The actual play is easy but to really understand all the effects that can be employed during play, you will have to read a couple hours worth of manual. The learning curve is high but again you can just blindly play and do pretty well. If you like large board games where you move pieces then this is your game - not recommended for novice war-gamers.

If you are familiar with AGEOD engine, then review is not needed. But if you are new gamer to this engine, all what can be said is, EXTREME complexity, which also draws a lot of time in even basic tasks like, learning the rules of the game, let alone playing it. But if you can grant yourself enough time and if you are old class Strategist, you will find this game rewarding!

Maybe the easiest Ageod game to get into. Though still abstract in the Ageod way.

Table-top Generals keen to this time period would enjoy.

The game is reminiscent of many of Paradox's games, though this is of another branch. This title, however, actually works in turns and there the nation building of Europa Universallis for instance.

It's not nearly as in-depth as EU, and the color scheme really is a pin on the eyes. The UI and layout could be better.

A decent game, though nothing special with their being better options for $20.

Birth of America II is a fun and well made game, what made you think very carefully your moves because you dont have huge stockpiles like in Victoria, and your supplies could go down very quickly if your overstretch your battle line.

also if your troops moral is depleted they could desert adding a new challenge to the game, you not only need to win the war, also you need to made your soldiers believe it. a 5 stars game

Although not as complex as Ageod's American Civil War counterpart, it is still an excellent and accurate depiction of the American Revolution and the French and Indian War that will certainly render many hours of entertaining game play.

I like this game a lot better than the Civil War game, but again, they both get 5 stars as they're fun to play and historically accurate.

By danielprates posted 16th Jun 2010

The people from Ageod always mention in their game descriptions that their games are 'easy to play and hard to master'. I would actually say they are hard to play and to master, since the interface and game dynamics are nothing alike other strategy games. The worse is gettin used to the 'command chain' system. BUUUUT... if you give the game a chance, it will win your heart. Everything is extremelly well thought out and accurate and history-faithfull. This is a 'grand strategy' game, do not think you will find here any big resource management, or lenthly campaigns and army building and such things. The idea of the game is to put in your hands historical armies in historically accurate reagions, depicting most of all (and this is the unique thing about Ageod's games) a real infraestructure net, which brings you realistic concerns on terms of supply, displacement of your army and the conceivement of an intelligent battle plan. Instead of just advancing and engaging and destroying things, the game gives you real concerns that ruined a good night's sleep of people like a Grant, a Napoleon or a King Frederick.

It is a very adult game, to put it in one word.

Another fine addition to a growing class of wargames. BOA2 does a great job of capturing the feel of the time period and their maps are second to none. The battles take some time to get used to, but once you grasp the concept there are many hours of enjoyment to be had.

Nice and detailed game. Very entertaining. Seems historically accurate. In some instances, too detailed (for example, a lot of units in peripheral areas, such as Louisiana and the Caribbean) and exhibiting a few annoying bugs. Beautiful map. Would like to see more scenarios.

Birth of America II - Wars in America review

By TheDarkside posted 16th Oct 2009

Disappointed. Given the price of the game I was expecting something more in-depth but it turns out the game has a thin surface which scratches off quickly revealing a hollow interior. Few games I can play only for a few hours and already feel bored of - this game is one of them.

Imagine a game like one of the total war games, except that the campaign map is far simpler (you cannot develop your towns or produce military units) and that there is absolutely no tactical map - the battles are arbitrarily 'rolled' to conclusion. That's what this game is.

By jhall375 posted 16th Jul 2009

Birth of America II is a perfect historical rendition of the revolution. Game play is much like a board game but the graphics and map board are good to excellent. Very addicting game with excellent AI. Alot of different units and unit leader capabilities make the game different each time you play. Battle and diplomatic graphics and game play could be alot better. Overall very good game with alot of hours of game play.
