Battle Mages Sign of Darkness review

I have to give one only two stars due to the dated graphics and UI, and so may other games that do RTS better. At $2.50, I would certainly give it a try. It did work smoothly on XP and their are cheats you can look up on the Internet if you need some help.

This expansion to Battle Mages includes a sizable new content. You get four new campaigns each with a different hero, but not all of them are available initially. You have to complete each campaign to unlock the next one. There are a number of new units and upgrades for each race (the elves got the most attention with more than two new units and upgrades). The undead are now playable and there is a whole new race: the dwarves. There is a new “Dark Magic” school with new spells and abilities. In addition to some improvements to the interface and some game tweaks.

Unfortunately, the core game mechanics remain the same. I know that eliminating micromanagement can be good for some, but I feel the game is too “simplified”. The game mainly depends on what path you choose or what enemies you fight first.

Battle Mages is certainly not a bad game. But if you want resource collecting, base building, true role-playing elements, or real strategy in your games, you probably won’t enjoy this game.
