Batman: Arkham City is third-person Action-Adventure game that delivers an authentic Dark Knight experience rooted in an original and engrossing story as well as a combination of melee combat, stealth, investigative and speed-based challenge gameplay. A sequel to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City features the full range of classic enemies seen in the previous game, in addition to Catwoman, who is a playable character and has her own storyline in the new release. Additional features include: a range of new gadgets, an increased number of possible melee opponents and a range of movement options for Batman that include leaping, sliding, gliding and the grapple hook.

Developed by Rocksteady Studios, Batman: Arkham City builds upon the intense, atmospheric foundation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, sending players soaring into Arkham City, the new maximum security "home" for all of Gotham City's thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. The game features an unique combination of melee combat, stealth, investigative and speed-based challenge gameplay. Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, this highly anticipated sequel introduces a brand-new story that draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight.

Batman Arkham City review

Solid overall game and easily some of the best fun you will have but the ending becomes a bit over the top and convoluted. Also has a slight pacing problem due to the open world aspects of it but that's easy enough to ignore.

Batman Arkham City review

As good as Batman: Arkham Asylum was, Arkham City is exactly the same game, only better in many aspects. Bigger, more detailed, more characters, better story, just a tiny bit of maturing technically.

It continues the saga of Batman games with the look-and-feel of Batman comics - dark-ish and not very funny despite caricatures many characters are.

Much exploration, good story, more than adequate combat system - what's there not to like?

Simply amazing. If you liked Arkham Asylum even a bit you will love this game. An open World, a mass of iconic characters and so much to do. The Fights are well done and its a lot of fun to try to reach the highest combo. See you in Arkham.

My personal GOTY of 2011 !

You return as Batman 6 months after the asylum closage. Meanwhile Dr. Hugo Strange build up Arkham City, the old city part now is a giant jail. The Situation there is tense and Bruce Wayne come in the game,as coincedence ? You will see....

Gameplay: Like asylum, this time with more gadgets and even better combos. Use more advanced technologies to your advantage. Riddle Secrets are back again and this time its not only with critical thinking but you also have to use your gadgets. Various Achievements and Game+ Mode. Many subplots, even after the regular ending, some objectives must be achieved afterwards. More Challenges and Huntings. You can get more with various DLCs.

Engine/Graphics/Sound: The Graphic Engine is using DX11 and Nvidias PhysX. The Graphic Engine is unbelievable good and makes a great atmosphere. But the system requirements are high, some players are not able to play with DX11 and have to switch with DX9. Neverthless, various updates came but still minor problems appear. The Soundtrack is much better than asylum in my opinion and gives a great feeling. If you found the "Pay Respect" Achievement, you will have a taste of it.

Must-Buy in 2011. You are better off with the Batman Arkham City GOTY in 2012 with all the DLC.

Arkham City expands upon every aspect of "Batman Arkham Asylum", adding new moves, a more flexible flight/movement system and plenty of side missions within each section of the city. You truly feel like the Dark Knight as you swoop from rooftop to rooftop taking down gangs, investigating clues and improving your arsenal.

Excellent

Fluid animations, wonderful audio and brilliant voice overs (including some from TAS) wrapp up a great game. Even just moving around is great fun.

It's a big improvement on the original, and that's saying something. It adds more gadgets, more enemies, more upgrades, a bigger sandbox, more of everything. The controls are pretty intuitive despite the huge number of options, so it's easy to learn, hard to master.

I'm not a great fan of action games but this is very good. The mouse and keyboard control is brilliant and well implemented for those of us that don't like gamepads. Presentation and artwork is fantastic and a real experience. The freedom of movement offered is also escellent for an action game and this game can be recommended to people who don't usually go for action games.

Batman Arkham City makes even more fun than its predecessor Arkham Asylum. The story is amazing, the voice acting is again brilliant.

The style is a mixture of the comics and the Christopher Nolan triology. This is definitly my Game of the Year.

Builds upon the already excellent gameplay of Arkham Asylum well, bringing the free roaming elements that make the city feel alive. Free form combat makes a comeback from the previous game, but with improvements. It is probably one of the best combat systems in a third person game to date. On the technical side, the game looks absolutely gorgeous in DX11 mode.

This game is simply amazing, even if you are not a Batman fan, it's worth it.

solid core game-play, open interesting world if a little simple at times.

By Fyrerook posted 12th August 2012

Arkham city has has a large open world that is great fun to explore, interesting side missions and a gritty, derelict feel that emphasize an interesting cast of some of the best Batman villains and while the game can feel somewhat disjointed by this openness unlike the more linear approach of Arkham Asylum it is improved in other areas the boss battles for example: one of the more lack-lustre elements of Asylum Asylum have been improved with bosses requiring a more tactical approach than tricking said boss to charge into a wall. All in all Arkham Asylum keeps the core elements of what made Asylum great, the story is a little shaky but with the side missions is interesting enough to keep rapt attention, personally I find the combat simplistic; following a press button to win ethos, however other people I have spoken to find that it immerses them more in the role of a martial expert such as batman is portrayed as. All in all a very enjoyable and impressive experience.

Arkham City offer a much open-world gameplay, combat system is much more fluent compare to Arkham Asylum, all the riddles and puzzles are much challenging but not frustratedly difficult, and the main storyline and side mission are fun to play. Another thing that make Arkham City so great is that you can play as Catwoman which she has a very different fighting style compare to Batman. This is a highly recommend game to be add into 5-stars game collection.

Arkham City is a wonder to behold, and players who played Arkham Asylum and not tried Arkham City will be astonished to see the size of the playing area much larger than the previous title, and more cunning Riddler trophies to collect. Well worth the money, get it now! Lots to do. Lots of Villains. Pure Batman.

Batman Arkham City..had more of what I loved from Arkham Asylum but tbh I found the city wide area a bit daunting a boring. I liked the slightly more confined space in Arkham Asylum but maybe thats just me. I still throughly enjoyed the story falling on from the orginal and enjoyed seeing the bad guys missed from the first especially Two-face. Graphics are demmanding but good...combat is ace as per usual...other than that I miss that we could not get to use the Batmobile or anything.

All n All another great addition to a severely limited set of good Batman games! :)

Obviously you couldn't say no to this if you bought the first one

Batman Arkham City was a great game to play. I was on the edge for buying it for a good long while, but then gamersgate had a deal going on where the game was only $10. I could not resist that price. Anyway it is a great game for fans of the comics, movies or cartoons or just someone who wants a well made action game. It has the best elements of the previous title, but adds open world elements to the mix. It is a very fun game. The main story takes about 20 hours, but if you get into the challenges unlocked by finding the Riddler trophies there are many more hours of gameplay. If your on the edge you should buy this game. I said so.

I played Arkham Asylum before. I really loved it. However, Arkham City is much better and bigger than that. It provides a long and fun game time.

And you won't be thinking about it's the same as old game. It's very different than old game. Maybe graphics should have been better. Still, it is an outstanding game with a remarkable story.

Batman Arkham City : the masterpiece of action gaming

By ketersephirot posted 28th May 2012

Batman AA was a great game.

Stunning graphic, good storyline, a quite perfect gameplay with a solid combat system and some "MetroidVania" gadgets make it one of the best "super hero game" out there.

Not mentioning the extras and the references of the comics.

Batman AC is even better. In any aspect.

Crispy graphic, a lot of new PhysX effect and an even better combat system make this game a masterpiece.

You have even more gadgets and you can free-roam over Arkham City with your hook.

If you are a fan of Batman you will encounter every foe of the Dark Knight!

There are also some section of the game where you play as CatWoman!

The new combat system is fantastic : you can fight 30 foes at times and you always have the full control of the action!

By the way the PC version of the game has some minor flaws.

First of all the DX11 implementation is bugged and you need to turn it off to have a decent framerate. In DX9 the graphic of the game is stunning however.

Another little problem is concerned to nVidia PhysX effects : those eyecandy are really really demanding and even my GTX560Ti (witch is a good card) suffer great frame drops even with medium setting.

It will be nice to have a low PhysX setting or an implementation similar to Batman AA (witch is run flawless on my PC at max settings).

For the rest if you like action game (even if you hate Batman) you shuold try this game!

One of the best action game I ever played!

An absolutely outstanding follow-up to Arkham Asylum. Combat has been vastly improved, as have animations and the control system. This is as close as it gets to being the Dark Knight.

Don't expect a sandbox game. The storyline is tight, but relatively linear. The point isn't to give the player a free rein anyway. It's about telling a story, and that is an area where this game excels.

This game gets so much right. At the current price, it's worth every cent.

Batman Arkham City - When a developer does the research and cares for the source material

By nevermore2782 posted 2nd March 2012

Where to start? Not only is it the greatest Batman game made, it comes pretty high up on lists of greatest action-adventure games of all time. Imagine if you can a game that has a stellar plot from writer Paul Dini of Batman:TAS fame, coupled with slick visuals, fluid combat, memorable boss fights from well implemented villain characters, lots of side quests, trademark detective work, including an open world that rewards careful exploration. I know that is one heck of a run-on sentence, but it doesn't even stop there. Trophies to collect, riddles to solve, challenges to compete in, there is just so much here and aside from the dirty business with the laggy choppy gameplay at launch, now patched this game runs great.

At first I couldn't get involved in this game but after a while it just got better and better and is truly an incredible. The gameplay is pretty much exactly the same as the first, which i suppose could be seen as a bad thing, but given how good the first game was I think it's a pretty good thing. And then it's just bigger and better than the first, great story and really well constructed side missions. The riddler challenges add varied gameplay and the new game plus gives it great replayability. Basically just get it!

Both "Batman Arkham Asylum" and "Batman Arkham City" are a must have for the Batman fans out there i think, and even for the non-fans who just like a good game.

I didnt expect to much when i bought the first one, cause Batman never really intrested me that much, but it wasnt long till i totally got caught up in this game and had to buy the sequal as well, both have cutting edge graphics, animations and voice acting, the characters are pretty much as i expect them to be based on the comics, your main enemy troughout the game is the Jokerwho is up to his usual schemes, and many of the other badguys make an apearance as well, one other villain in paticulour that you will be there troughout the game is "the Riddler" who has placed riddles, trophies and secrets" all over the island for you to find/solve, can you outsmart the Riddler? he thinks not!

As for the scenery and overal style, it all does feel like your in the actual Batman universe, it got a good comic feel to it in a serious way

Prepare to be addicted!

By aurdal posted 16th January 2012

If you loved Arkham Asylum then you will love this game! The first Batman, Arkham Asylum, was already a fantastic game. The sequel is even bigger, better and more addictive. Prepare for endless hours of looking for the different riddles, while kicking ass like only Batman can.

It could get a bit repetive at the end, but if you like searching every little corner of the game, you won't finish this game for a long time! The game itself is an excellent blend of action and stealth and you get a genious arsenal of typical batman weapons and of course as you engage in one of the best fighting systems going today is a joy.

I recommend everyone to buy it!

First off, let me say that this game should set the standard for every super hero game made from here on out. The Fight mechanics were beautiful, along with the graphics. Believe the Hype!

By jimminysausage posted 30th December 2011

If you loved Arkham Asylum then this game is even better. Bigger in every way, bigger map, more secrets, more characters, more fun, if you can believe it. It features voice acting as good as or even better than the first and some of the best in gaming. Controls are intuitive and will have you feeling like a Caped Crusader in no time. Graphics are great, the story is excellent and with so many small things packed around every environment you are never bored. It looks as nice as the first with every character model worthy of the action figures that are sure to come out based on them. The music perfectly evokes Batman's brooding, operatic world. If the first game was the best comic-to-video-game adaptation in its time, then the title has been stolen now by the sequel.

Playing as Batman you feel like the ultimate hero, and I wasn't anticipating much out of playing as Catwoman but she more than holds her own and soon you are thinking, 'All these hardened criminals must be terrified of her...' I have a new respect for the character!

I am a huge Batman fan with a bookshelf full of comics, every issue of Batman, Detective and all the major spinoffs since Jason Todd's Robin died in 1988, and for me the best thing about the game is how true to the comics universe this game is. Not the films, not the animated series but the comics (ok, the DC universe changed about two months before this game came out, but still). It follows the canonical material with love and attention and rewards the eagle eyed fan in every small detail of its deliciously grim, gothic world. Sure, some small details they change for the sake of game mechanics, for example, Arkham Asylum in the first game was on an island so there was a reason you could only go so far in a given direction, but the game's heart is full to the brim with decades of Batman folklore.

You will use cunning, tactics to take out your enemies, meet many crazy villains, escape many death traps and solve many puzzles in one of the best games of the year. If you're a Bat-fan I can't recommend this game highly enough. If you're not, play the game anyway, and you soon will be.

Batman Arkham City review

By rwils51 posted 29th December 2011

An outstanding game. The individual components of Arkham City are crafted and beautifully polished. Arkham City is bursting at the seams. The main storyline is a ruggedly paced campaign, bouncing Batman between super villains as they each go about their own agenda in Arkham’s sprawl. Strange, Two-Face, Joker and Penguin at you in quick succession. And that’s just at the start. There is so much going on that players can get lost on the visual details that are beautifully rendered.

Getting another chance to use Batman's considerable combat talents as you engage in one of the best fighting systems going today is a joy. The city looks terrific, like it's one step away from just bursting into flames as criminals crawl across every single surface doing... whatever it is that criminals do when they're locked in a city-shaped prison. The interior areas look just as good, giving you a sense that, again, this is a realistic place that's been overrun.Just get the game and enjoy.

Everybody wants to be Batman, but even if you dont know who Batman is, you are still going to enjoy this game. There is a nice mix of gameplay styles, incorporating combat, stealth, gadgets, treasure hunts and puzzles.

Graphically the game looks great and when you add in the sterling voice acting, you get a very immersive experience.

The game is chock full of bang per buck, you can play as Catwoman as well as Batman, also there is a New Game Plus mode and Challenge Maps, add all of this to the huge game world, expanded past the Asylum of the last game, to include Arkham City and you have probably the best game release of 2011.

Enjoy!

The Bat is back!

By locutus13 posted 2nd December 2011

As a sequel to the Batman Arkham Asylum game that surprised most people by being just phenomenally awesome, this game had big shoes to fill. And it’s doing it right!

Set right after the events that took place in Arkham Asylum, Batman tries to get a city full of Gotham's most dangerous criminals under control. You can expect a GTA-like play style where you can basically do anything you want and the missions only start once you enter a specific area or pick up a ringing phone. The combat is absolutely amazing but still challenging when you have to take on tougher enemies in large groups. Once you get the hang of it you will be chaining 30+ combos and truly look like the “Dark Knight” in action. The story is well written and there are a lot of plot twists that sometimes force you to divert your attention from your main goal. For completionists: The infamous Riddler is back of course, with more riddles and collectables than before.

Playing as the Dark Knight himself you always feel like you have an edge over your enemies. But the enemies learn and adapt and later in the story they start shooting down your gargoyles, use thermal imaging goggles and even equipment that neutralizes your detective mode. The player will have to adapt his tactics to be able to overcome these odds and sometimes even luck plays a large factor on how well you do. Playing as Catwoman however is almost a different play-style: As she does not have the technological gizmos that Batman can rely on she has to be even more careful when approaching armed enemies. Once the guns are out of the way though, it’s even more satisfying to watch her take out large groups than it with Batman.

The game boasts with DirectX11 graphics Tessellation and PhysX support. Unfortunately the release version has a confirmed DX11 bug that totally wrecks performance on almost any rig. My GTX580 with a i5-2500k@4Ghz(oc) and NVIDIA290.36 did an average 39 FPS but there were a lot of drops to 1 FPS while benchmarking. Playing on DX9 is a workaround till the patch rolls in but it really hurts the graphical fidelity IMHO.

Conclusion: If you liked the first game you just have to own this one! It is even better!

If you like stealth action games you also need a copy of this one!

Unsure? Buy “Batman Arkham Asylum – GotY Edition” and prepare to get addicted!
