Rating: 4.6 (20 votes cast)

Bloodthirsty bandits. Vicious monsters. Tons of loot. Lock, Load and face the madness. Gearbox Softwareʼs acclaimed sci-fi hit comes to the Mac complete with all four add-on packs. Borderlands is a unique hybrid of first person shooter and role-playing game with a super sharp visual style and a compelling 4 player co-op mode.

Planet Pandora is a sparsely populated wasteland where the rule of law gets rewritten daily in the smoke of the last gun battle. Civilization consists of small outposts on the fringe of human influence, in an area called the Borderlands. Pandoraʼs one tourist attraction is a mythical Vault supposedly packed with fantastic riches.

Fortune hunters, corrupt corporate mercenaries and lowlife hoodlums roam the landscape, searching under every grain of sand for the treasure. Since most intelligent life on Pandora has the occupation of Vault Hunter, society has gone to hell - making the outposts and outback areas more than just a little dangerous.

Borderlands Game of the Year Edition (Mac) review

By pajsaraf posted 13th October 2011

Beautiful art direction, great use of music and sound, would have made a great film but it has some big issues.

Single player is dull. The presentation is good but the enemies require massive amount of damage to go down, some low level bosses need dozens of hits before they die.

The reason for this is because the game was made to be played in coop and with many allies, the high resistance of the boss characters makes sense, but it nerds the single player experience.

Couple this with a check point save system which means that every time you die you restat far away from where you left of and forced to backtrack for miles and a lack of multiplayer gamer on gameranger and your left with a very empty and frustrating experience.

If you want this game, get it on the consoles or pc, Mac is a bad home. The port is resource heavy and runs poorly even on powerful systems although this statement is true only if you try to max settings. There is a large variety of video option to allow most macs to run game acceptably. Still, the performance is markedly better on pc

Borderlands Game of the Year Edition (Mac) review

A solid addition to the growing number of action rpgs available for the mac. Borderlands is a mix of action/adventure/looting rpg set in an interesting and stylish world. Highly recommended for anyone looking to bide their time until Diablo III arrives.

Pros:

-FPS and Looting RPG! It's hard not to enjoy sniping a skag from a hundred yards out and seeing that little purple light pop up - time to go get that awesome gun. Maybe better - jumping into a valley full of baddies, health steeling grenades and your favorite shotgun in tow, dropping a turret (soldier), going ape s*&%, and seeing all the pretty items start to litter the ground.

-Did I mention looting? There are tons, and I mean millions, of items in this game. From fire enhanced pistols to modified grenades (not just damage mods, but behavior mods, too - one grenade mod lands, then bounces up into the air before detonating, another saps health from your enemies). There are bosses and different levels of enemies, and they respawn, just like in Diablo II, so there are plenty of opportunities to re-loot areas that have great drops. You won't find every item in this game, not without playing it way too much.

-Character builds. At first glance, the different character builds seem overly similar, but they aren't. Each class is unique within the game's structure. Furthermore, each class can be customized based on your playing type. For instance, the Soldier has a main skill of summoning a gun turret that attacks and functions as a shield. Not the kind of player to rely on help and shelter, but you tend to run out of ammo? Okay. Use your skill points to modify your turret to drop ammo. Using your turret as your main attack (not particularly recommended)? Fine. Pump it's firing and regeneration rates, and go to town. Of course, there are standard skills that allow you to increase proficiencies in particular weapons (shotguns, combat rifles, rocket launchers, etc.), your health, shield regeneration, etc.

-Style! This game has great style - important when the meat of the game is looting. You're in a good looking world, and it won't slow your mac book down tremendously, so you'll be able to enjoy it as your on your way back to the closest vending machine to sell your loot and resupply.

Cons:

-Repetitive: for those of you who love looting, this might not be that big of a deal. For those of you looking for variety in story, challenge, and enemies, you won't really find that here. There are very few enemy types, and they change primarily in color and difficulty. Quests are repetitive (go here, kill this named enemy, and I'll give you a new gun).

-Inventory management: If you want to make lots of money, you're going to spend a lot of time going back and forth between various locations and the nearest store. Your inventory space is limited, and, while it does grow throughout the game, it doesn't grow at the pace of the increase in drop quality. If you're not worried about making lots of money, and are okay with using drops to upgrade your equipment, this won't be an issue. Keep a couple of good guns to take back to the store if you need to stock up on ammo.

Overall, this is a great game, and I'm picky. Enjoy!
