About the Game

Welcome To Columbia

The year is 1912.

With the United States emerging as a world power, the floating City of Columbia is a mighty symbol of American ideals, launched with great fanfare to the cheers of a captivated public. But what begins as an endeavour of hope soon turns to disaster, as the city disappears into the clouds, its whereabouts unknown. The greatest accomplishment in American history has vanished without a trace.
The player assumes the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, sent to Columbia to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned there since childhood. He will develop a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt will learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.

A great experience

By ShiWeiLi posted 5th May

Bioshock Infinite is a wholeheartedly great experience, that lives up to its pedigree. While far more linear than the last Bioshock (and somewhat less worthy of multiple playthroughs) it showcases a lot of immersion and incredible production value. The storyline and setting are packed with imagination and wholly worth the cost of admission--even though the game probably clocks about a shy 12 hours total. This is a gamer's game, no mistake, don't think that the experience is going to deviate too greatly from every other FPS out there; lots of head-shots and violence await your trip through the city in the sky. The mood is cavaliering and the run-and-gun action is a great break from the cover-based monotony that has become the norm. The world is very well fleshed out, and the spectacle hits you full force. The ending is one of the best conclusions in recent memory and elevates every moment proceeding it in its profundity.

Admittedly, the gameplay has slightly less depth than the previous Bioshock. But it's not terribly lacking for it, instead it feels streamlined. There is far less choice in this game as well, but the game is focused on a single storyline instead. I'd definitely advise everyone who has enjoyed a shooter in the past to give this game a go (and play the first one first). It's a thrilling story arc and a great showcase of the power of first-person immersion in a virtual world. For those who were expecting an experience their non-gamer friends and family could watch: you won't find it here. But the world is worth wading through (guns and glory in all), you won't be disappointed by the commentary, imagination, and detail on display. This is a solid A effort by Ken Levine, 9/10.

This game is amazing. I like the gameplay and the graphic is wonderfull, the only matter is the story. The story is slow to start. You have to reach about mid game to see something happen. The ending is really good. Buy it!!!!

Really great game with a great mind bending well told story. The gameplay isnt always perfect, you can only hold 2 weapons and most likely you will only use the same skills over and over again ;), but there are so many details/references to find and the whole Infinite world is just so beautiful especially the music :D.

I loved every minute with it.

Perfect story-telling, good shooter

By h82k posted 4th May

BioShock Infinite is a really good experience and it is on of the few games that I will remember.

This is mainly caused by the great story, the atmosphere and the characters, not so much because of the shooting parts. I think they could have been a little bit better, for example the vigors aren't really needed and the difficulty is set a little bit too low.

I think the game desrves the 5 stars anyways as I didn't want to stop playing it and as it was a great fun.

The playing time is okay, 10-12 hours if you are a little bit slower, but you'll definately want to play the game again!

this game have some pros an cons, but overall is an awesome game, maybe is a little overrated by the critics, the combat is kind of average, but the story of this game, the design, mostly everything on this game is awesome.

In my opinion Columbia doesn't have the same impact of Rapture, but it's anyway a great game with a more interesting storyline. It must be played and re-played, for appreciate all the aspect of the plot, and the 1999 mode it's the best way for do this!

BioShock Infinite review

By jamesfaggo posted 24th April

I had been eagerly awaiting this game ever since finishing Bioshock late last year. When comparing the two, the first seems much stronger with its sense of design being so well integrated into the art direction, environments, and story of Rapture. While Infinite's visually just as compelling as its predecessor with its Columbia, I felt some lack of integration between the game play and the other aspects, which suffered most around the middle-end of game when the world faded into the background in place of hoards of shoot-em up combat (which wasn't overly interesting in it's design or mechanics, along with its somewhat troublesome relation to the storyline). Despite that, the story's handling of character, the settings, and the earlier and end game were all wonderful pieces, and while there are flaws in the game as a whole, the experience wasn't too tainted by them and it was a worthwhile game to play.

BioShock Infinite review

By haThor posted 24th April

The game is all right, but it is not as good as some people say it is. The story is extremely good and especially the ending is pretty damn awesome. Unfortunately the gameplay isn't very good in my opinion. The gunplay is outright boring, upgrades for weapons are not even visible, and all in all the combat (which except for the cutscenes is the only thing to do in this game) is simply not satisfying. One would be better served watching this game as a movie rather than to actually play the game. But still, the story and especially the ending are something every gamer should have experienced.

It's almost a month now, and still deeply in love with this game. I am not a big fan of shooter games, neither this series, but this game is just exceptional. Looks good, plays good, narrates mindblowingly. After a long long time, really feeling enthusiastic about one particular game. Wholeheartedly recommended. If you haven't played it till now, just play it, its worth every penny.

BioShock Infinite is a brilliant shooter that nudges the entire genre forward with innovations in both storytelling and gameplay. It trips over itself in a couple of spots, but not in any way that should keep you from embracing it with your utmost enthusiasm.

BioShock Infinite review

By occono posted 17th April

Very pretty game. Very nice style. The narrative spins several different ideas well, but perhaps doesn't resolve any of them fully; you may wish it had more focus. You may also wish the game perhaps felt a little more like Fallout: the story seems constrained by its straightforward FPS mechanics at times. And there should be more Skyrails.

Simply amazing

By Mar1oRtcw posted 17th April

Is very hard to describe this game. I can start saying this is one of the best game I've ever played. Great art direction, setting and plot superb, amazing final. It's not just another FPS, it's something more. Columbia and Elizabeth are the best parts of the game, you'll find yourself to love both. Ultimately, one of the rare games that you can't lose for no reason at all ..

I have been enjoying every minute of this game. Truly, a worthy successor to the original Bioshock.

The artwork is superb; the story, compelling; and Elizabeth is just awesome.

A definite must play for everyone.

BioShock Infinite review

By stormyllama posted 14th April

A very beautiful looking, and very deep story for a video game.

Ken Levine's opus.

But on the down side, the combat is fairly stock Modern Military Shooter game play,

where a game with similar mechanics and style engine like "Dishonored" has more evolved combat style.

But still a great game, but you will finish it in an few days or more.

There is re-playability if your a fan of the series, or if must just loot everything.

BioShock Infinite review

By ciaranm posted 14th April

The best thing about this game is probably the imaginative world and the characters it contains. Elisabeth is a good NPC for a change: she actually helps out and is quite interesting. Her idle animations are also good. Possibly not as good as the first Bioshock, depending on your tastes. I'd recommend playing in "Hard" the first time, if you've played any similar games. Lower difficulties mean you can spam one or two attacks, higher mean you have to use more strategy. Music, graphics and sound are all top notch, though many users experience slowdown for a couple of seconds after entering a new area. Avoid the `fixes': they break texturing. +1/2 a star for things like the barbershop quartet band!

BioShock Infinite review

By mychuck posted 9th April

Starting from the very first moment, the graphics are overwhelming. My personal favorite moment is right at the start, when you arrive in the sky. The look, the music, just amazing.

Throughout the game you have a great story which is extended by the voxaphones (recordings from characters in the game and you really should listen to them all to understand the story).

12-15 houts full of great atmosphere where you find yourself very often just standing there and looking around enjoying the moment ;)

Wow, what can I say other than go buy this game NOW. I rarely buy games when they first come out, but this game is worth it. The story telling is up there with the best gaming has to offer. I actually found myself caring about the characters and the outcome. There is enough weapon/gear/powers upgrades to keep things interesting and even give it another playthrough. A gorgeous world and very interesting art style unlike anything I've ever played.

You just can't miss buying this game, and at around 20-30 hours of gameplay, you will get your money's worth.

My BioShock Infinite review

By DarkLiberator posted 8th April

Best game I've played this year so far.

The game is very well crafted. Well polished. The atmosphere is fantastic. You enter a world of Columbia thinking everything seems all right, but there is a nastiness hidden from the surface.

The voice acting is excellent, especially by Elizabeth and Lady Comstock. Booker is a good character too.

The combat mechanics are solid. Gameplay is smooth and the scripted scenes don't feel intrusive unlike most games.

I give this a 5/5.

BioShock Infinite review

By Rajdane posted 6th April

Maybe not deserving a 10/10 as many reviewers have said, but definitely a game doing a great narrative job.

If the shooting mechanics and the vigors were just a bit better, this would have been near a perfect game. Still, very enjoyable and a must-own!

An unusually complex and involving video game narrative

By Kommakongen posted 5th April

Bioshock Infinite is a game that will immediately suck you in with its gorgeous, wonderfully fleshed out world and intriguing plot-line. It is a plot which gets more and more complex and involving as the game progresses, to the point where you feel you must press on to see what's going to happen next, all the while you're trying to fill in the gaps and figure out how everything ties together in the overall story. Upon finishing the game, you will be left with the satisfaction of an amazing storyline that fits together perfectly, but there is still so much to think about, analyze and interpret. This is one of those extremely rare games where you'll restart the whole thing immediately upon finishing, not because of the gameplay, but because there are so many plot elements introduced from the very beginning that you'll want to go back and re-experience it all, to better understand the game's narrative intent.

The first-person combat, which consists of regular shooting interspersed with the use of vigours (AKA your magic left hand slinging fire, lightning etc. at enemies), is really good in itself, but in the grand scheme of things it is simply there to support the narrative thematically.

In short, I urge everyone to play Bioshock Infinite, unless you are somehow opposed to video games as a story-telling artform.

Best FPS Narrative in Years

By CrinnyCow posted 5th April

My favorite FPS games from this past generation are Metro 2033 and the original Bioshock title. In my opinion, Bioshock infinite is a more enjoyable experience than either of these games. The art direction is stunning, the voice acting is spot on, and the story itself is interesting and comes together in a very cool way at the end. I highly recommend this game.

A true game of the year !

By cmgreenland posted 4th April

I have not played a game with as much depth in story and gameplay since the first Bioshock. The storyline contains many twists and turns and ultimately end in a brilliant conclusion. Vigors and a varity of weapons make for engaging and interesting gameplay and the 1999 mode unlocked after you complete the game

provides a very challenging way of replaying the game and you will want to replay it ! Overall Bioshock Infinite is a fantastic game and has one of the best first person shooter/RPG storyline's in recent gaming history. 5 out of 5 stars ! Can't wait to see what the DLCs have to offer

BioShock Infinite review

By mightypea posted 4th April

Beautiful art in a cohesive artstyle, a gorgeous city and characters just stylised enough to escape the uncanny valley.

Sadly it's unrepentantly linear, and the combat beings to drag before the game's even halfway, due in no small part to boring weaponry.

Good, but not the mind blowing (pre)sequel I expected

By Daithi posted 2nd April

Rating 8/10

First off, I haven't actually finished Infinite yet. This speaks volumes, as I couldn't put down either of the predecessors until the end credits rolled.

At first Infinite would seem to tick all the right boxes. I'm a huge fan of skillfully blended FPS/RPG, and had enough faith in 2K to pre-order (which I virtually never do). Infinite looks good, sounds good, and has a compelling narrative. Gun-play is also much slicker than predecessors, but, for me, that's where the good stuff ends. The sky-line and tears are interesting, but they didn't really do it for me.

A lot has changed since BS1 and BS2, and I'm really not a fan of many of these changes. I'm aware these changes will appeal to some, and won't detract from the experience for others, but here goes:

- Two weapon limit, and ammo capacity is relatively small (even with gear).

- Multiple ammo types have been done away with, so a lot of the earlier weapons are close to useless against anything beyond a standard enemy

- Turrets and vending machines can't be hacked. Instead, turrets can be temporarily posessed.

- None of build up to taking down big enemies (i.e. setting traps, making sure weapons are loaded with correct ammo, hacking turrets). Now the big enemies just pop up and rush you.

- You can only hold a small amount of salts (Eve equivalent). You can only have as much as your bar allows, no hypos. Consequently, you won't be using vigors (Plasmid equivalents) as often.

- Stuttering when moving into new areas. My comp is only mid-range, but this is the first game I've had performance issues with.

BioShock Infinite review

By Flokman posted 2nd April

Best game I ever played. This isnt your standart shooter, but a game with a very good story and new ways to fight your enemies. Apart from normal weapons, you have magic like powers to launch your enemies in the air, to set them on fire or electricity, posses your enemies and machines and many more! You can also charge all these powers to create traps and upgrade your magic and weapons them for more power! But this is not all the sets this game apart from the other shooters, you have Elizabeth by your site. Elizabeth is a main chracter in the story and has a AI you have never seen before! When other game let you babysit the AI most of the time, in BioShock Infinite its Elizabeth who babysits you! When you are on low health, ammo or money she will trow you some healt, ammo or money. Elizabeth has also magic powers to 'spawn' turrets, supplies, cover or other things in. All these things mean you can play the game in your own style. The story is so good that you want to play to the end to get all the anwsers. The game will take around 15 hours to finish, but there will be 3 DLCs to provide more Infinite! This game stand apart from BioShock 1 and 2 so you dont have to play those first to get the story (this game is set in 1912 and Bioshock 1 and 2 around 1960).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, really amazing game, when you first arrive in Colombia it's simply awe inspiring! A game where you can just look around and marvel at the setting is always good, the game was really good except I felt rather short maybe more could have been done before the first tear? You suddenly found yourself working for the vox but you never really get to experience that world, before everything is turned on its head and then all out war, the end was really good but left me a little bit confused, Good game but like Dishonoured way too short.

Graphics are wonderful (but ists subjective, you just have to like the cartoon style).

Fighting is fun, the new features really fit:

- aiming is much more accurate than in BS I+II

- You have a shield

- Really nice vigors

- a lot of enemys

- skytrain is fun also

So BS:I is a shooter with story, good fights, a nice setup and last but not least characters, which have soul. Enjoy!

BioShock Infinite review

By grynnan posted 31st March

Never thought I'd see a single player FPS, as good as this.

Most games today, has a small single player part, but it's true gaming-value is in multiplayer.

With BioShock Infinite, you get one awesome story, with true "I didn't see that coming" -twists.

As you probably already know you will find your self in a floating city in a steampunk setting, where the citizens behaves almost as real life organics. The AI is sometimes making mistakes, and sometimes looks human controlled. But the mistakes, are not from badly written AI, the mistakes are "human".

And the companion(s) you encounter, seems to know where you are going, and what you are about to do next, before you even you do, but not in bad way, no, it's in a good and sometimes scary way, the AI helps and yes, sometimes even stops you from doing something silly.

I must say, even though it's a singleplayer, you never feel alone. And the best part, the AI doesn't hold you back, if you want to do something silly, or just go and explore it will let you.

The polished UT3 engine, is beautiful, and well used in this game.

With DX11, you also get some nice tessellation effects, that gives the surroundings a lifelike shim.

BioShock Infinite is a fantastic follow-up to the original game that mostly makes up for the disappointment that was BioShock 2. The game features an engaging and thought-provoking narrative in addition to fast-paced gameplay. The normal gameplay that one might find in an FPS is enhanced by the character Elizabeth, who adds an extra dimension to the gun-play. BioShock Infinite is highly recommended.

BioShock Infinite Review from TheCyanFirefly

By Lyiat posted 29th March

Irrational Games has done it again! Bioshock Infinite clearly stands up on its own two feet as worthy successor to the Bioshock series. While it does take a few departures from the previous games that I find questionable, it is none the less a complete must buy. The storyline is crazy and an absolute thrill ride, and the gameplay is just as good as ever. Pick this up and have an utter blast.

Now, I rate this game 4/5, largely because I do not believe in a perfect game and I hate rating systems. This game, similarly, has issues. While the game is relatively bug free, I have run into a small handful of them, such a missing binding box (I could walk through a wall) and at one point I managed to get stuck on a Skyline, unable to turn around. I also very much dislike the two-gun restriction almost every single game has nowadays, and believe Bioshock never should have gone that route. All and all, however, I am still very pleased with this title and hope that anyone else who plays it gets just as much joy as I did.

One of the best games I've ever played in my life. Irrational Games' Ken Levine before known as "the man who made System Shock 2 and Bioshock" now is easily one of the most important minds in the video game industry. When you play Bioshock Infinite, you can see the power of video games, and when it's made by a wonderful studio with a great mind behind comand all these wonderful people that love what they do, you can see the power that games has.

This game is awesome. It isn't comparable with Bioshock 1, because it isn't the same place, but, it's sublime.

It has a story that always is unpredictable, but always is correct.

They have known introduce voice to the protagonist, giving a very good plus.

In this game appears at first time a second protagonist, Elisabeth, with a human character, although sometimes (because she helps you) this does the game less difficult.

The ambientation, perfect, they have known do outdoor environments with great skill.

Perfect.

A true masterpiece, puts Dishonored to shame. If Dishonored was the "Game of the Year", I don't know What Bioshock Infinite is. I know they're not exactly same, but they feel similar with the steampunk setting and combine-magic-and-firearms style. Dishonored made me feel like "Come on, just end and let me move on", whereas Bioshock Infinite makes me come back for more from day one.

It's a pity that the game is single-player only. Still,it lives up to the legend of Bioshock. Play it.

BioShock Infinite review

An amazing game, simply a must buy for those who believe in games as an art form; often feeling like an interactive film which is heavily plot driven with game play that keeps combat fresh and exciting.

My problem with the previous bioshock games and other games with unique worlds is that they often lean towards a post-apocalyptic setting, personally I find dull and grey. Bioshock Infinite brings the gritty, realistic feel from those settings and hides it thinly behind a veil of grandeur and majestic scenery. A truly engaging environment which again, leads to the amazing plot and interaction between the characters.

Fans of FPSs and RPGs will like this game but the real joy comes from the story development, character interaction between Booker and Elizabeth and the impact of your choices within the game. Enjoy!

BioShock Infinite - More than I was expecting

By cryocore posted 27th March

Let me start this by stating I liked BioShock, but I adore System Shock 2. I always felt that BioShock was a weaker rehash of System Shock 2 made to appeal to a mass audience and not for the core audience wanting a challenge as well as a compelling narrative. While the narrative is compelling it was a much weaker game overall. BioShock Infinite avoids this issue entirely.

I played this on 1999 Mode from the start, and the difficulty and need to specialize made me EXTREMELY happy. This is a game that provides challenge and best of all a sense of achievement. As always Irrational Games present us with a compelling, complex and nuanced story which at least if not surpasses that of BioShock.

This is an instant buy for any shooter fan, but more importantly a must buy for anyone who misses games that challenged you and gave you a boot in the ass if you make a mistake

I played on Ultra, and is just amazing, very wonderful graphics.Everytime I step into a new area, was great to look around how the city of Columbia looks like. From the begining of the game, since you step into the church, the music is blowing your mind.Absolutely enjoyable.

Bioshock Infinite is everything but the story. Is not like any other FPS,just shoot and kill,is a story to be told,is a mystery of a city,a mystery of a 'false shepherd'.

And of course,Elizabeth. Her story will be told for many years to come. She is not someone you need to save, she is a wonderful character, very well made and is astonished to look how she react with the living world. So much expressions.

Even if you are not a big fan of FPS you will enjoy this game. The weapons and the fighting style are really wonderful.

Buy this game even if you haven't played the last ones.

BioShock Infinite review

If you have played the original Bioshock or its sequel you pretty much know what your in for in terms of gameplay. It uses exactly the same system as the previous games. Unfortunately the game seems to rely even more on gunplay than previous titles though. Between the hordes of enemies you have little time to come up with a plan, which you sort of require to use the special abilities, meaning your forced into using your gun a lot more. The sky-rails and tears add an interesting twist to the gameplay, however the tears I found to be a bit weak and poorly used/designed. The story is definitely an improvement though, there is much more of a sense of having a direction to go in. The story of Bioshock often was a bit flat in that regard, less motivation to move forward. That said the story does jump-the-shark somewhat towards the end, it makes it self too complicated for its own good, and there are a number of issues that don't really make sense. Let alone the big twist for the conclusion I saw coming from about midway through the game, so hardly a revelationary surprise it was apparently meant to be.
