Avencast – Rise of the Mage review

A good action rpg. It require some strategic choice to defeat the enemies. Game is based only on magic. Action it's not furious and there is also some quest to solve without combat. Plot is not so interesting.

Hi,

Avencast, is a (RPG), guilders as credits, spells, enemies, quests. Strike with weapons + spells with a click, has configurable keys. Advance skills + spell traits + become a talented hero. Outfit your character slots, collect items from treasure chests, dead enemies, also has a configurable highlight key for quests, items, and NPC's. Complete quests, trade, battle enemies + creatures. Good options, NPC speeches, sounds + ask and answer questions with a click, making it excellent. Avencast has (3PS)(TPS) perspectives. Has camera angles, follow mode = behind the character + zoom controls + fixed (horizontals) mouselooks rotates the gameworld + keep moving.

Very good (RPG), with a difference,

This is a great game, with its share of flaws, but it's truly a gem. I'd definitely recommend picking it up and giving it a whirl, you definitely won't regret it!

I bought this game a few weeks ago.

Although the game was more or less fine, the moving/combat interface id VERY cumbersome and you will often find yourself looking in a different direction than what you want to (including the mobs attacking you), so whatever you do, SAVE OFTEN.

Besides this, I just hit a blocking bug, did an Internet search, and found that the GamersGate version is far out of date.

GamersGate downlad offers the game then a patch 1.02.

The current version is 1.04a from July 2008 (found at http://www.avencast.com/index.php?id=115 )

The version for download there is only compatible with boxed version, and they specifically state 'Warning: This patch can not be applied to downloaded versions! Please download the specific patch from the website of your online retailer! '... which we do not have.

It's all I can do to avoid a 5-star review. I've played this game for many hours and truly love it. The magic system is nearly up there with Arx Fatalis as my favorite in the genre. I love the way the spells look...lots of lighting and color effects used. Excellent. Feels like you're actually doing something and it's very satisfying. The puzzles are fair, the enemy AI is somewhat smart for a budget title like this. Early on you spend a lot of time at the academy, but I like the cave/dungeon areas the best. The various creatures you encounter look really good. It's somewhat like the first Dungeon Siege. Can't recommend this enough. Scoring is difficult. I'll go with 5 stars to rate it against other budget titles and not necessarily other RPGs. Although it compares nicely with your average action RPG.

If you are an rpg especially mage lover pick up this game. It has got nice graphics, and spell animations and quite a good amount of spells. At start game can be pretty boring but after you unlock new spells you will have fun playing it. What i didnt like about this game is music... it just got annoying for me to listen after a while. Story isnt that great but this game is fun anyway.

Fun fantasy style RPG, weak in story, makes up for it in it's combat animation and the spell mechanic, some of the twitchy animation(maybe its a bug) makes some of the spell look more epic than it should be. The game itself is pretty lengthy with some neatly design boss encounters.I recommend this game to any person who likes magic and fantasy style rpg.

This one was quite enjoyable classical style hack & slash RPG, much like the Diablo series. Just with the emphasis mainly concentrated around the spell-casting side of things, just as the title suggests. All the battling can get a bit tedious at times as most of the enemies have quite a lot of HP and you have to constantly backtrack as you don´t want to get in close-up confrontations with the enemies as an mage, for too long. But it also does contain some puzzle-elements along the way, which offer you an nice break from all the grinding.

I would say this is an game worth checking out for all the fans of this genre.

Avencast is a Point&Click game, most similar to the famous franchise of Diablo. What is interesting and what is setting this game apart is its focus more on magical aspect of fighting, then regular close combat spree, also graphic are very good, and very luring! Story is present and enjoyment is always present! On negative side, like in most hack&slash games, after some time, there is nothing new to see, except lure of better skill and more majestic effects of new unlocked magics. All in all, a MUST for anyone who likes this kind of games!

Avencast – Rise of the Mage review

Avencast is a good game. I’ve enjoyed it a bit but definitely not as much as other excellent games like Mass Effect, Drakensang, or Dragon Age. Its strongest point in my opinion is its gameplay. The story is not bad either. You can choose between three difficulty settings so there is some replay value if you’ve enjoyed the game and wanted to test your skills at the higher difficulties.

The simple role playing mechanics are compensated by a strong combat system. The combat is real time and, unlike many hack and slash games, requires some skill. You can dodge attacks and perform special moves, and your aiming (for ranged attacks) must be accurate, especially against elusive enemies. Players can choose between three control methods so that everyone can find the controls that suit him best.

The graphics are good. Of course they pale in comparison with other high quality RPGs with high production values. Decent character models and environments, and some nice looking spells and special effects but nothing really spectacular. The good thing is that this game will run flawlessly on any decent desktop or laptop. As for the audio, the music is nearly nonexistent and the sound effects are limited but most of the dialog is voiced and the overall voice acting is acceptable.

I think Avencast is a good choice for RPG fans who like a little bit of dodging and combo moves instead of constant mouse clicking, and will only set them back 9 bucks or less.
