GAME SUMMARY

Assassin's Creed

Rating: 4.3 (397 votes cast)

Assassin’s Creed is the next-gen game developed by Ubisoft Montreal that will redefine the action genre. While other games claim to be next-gen with impressive graphics and physics, Assassin’s Creed merges technology, game design, theme, and emotions into a world where you instigate chaos and become a vulnerable, yet powerful, agent of change.

The setting is 1191 AD. The Third Crusade is tearing the Holy Land apart. You, Altair, intend to stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict.

You are an Assassin, a warrior shrouded in secrecy and feared for your ruthlessness. Your actions can throw your immediate environment into chaos, and your existence will shape events during this pivotal moment in history.

Key Features

  • Be an Assassin
Master the skills, tactics and weapons of history’s deadliest and most secretive clan of warriors. Plan your attacks, strike without mercy and fight your way to escape.
  • Experience exclusive PC content
Four PC-exclusive investigation missions make the game an even better experience than its console predecessors, including the Rooftop Race Challenge, a race to a specified location and the Archer Stealth Assassination Challenge, where the player must assassinate all archers in a certain zone to help out fellow Assassins.
  • Realistic and responsive environments
Experience a living, breathing world in which all your actions have consequences. Crowds react to your moves and will either help or hinder you on your quests.
  • Action with a new dimension – total freedom
Eliminate your targets wherever, whenever and however. Stalk your prey through richly detailed, historically accurate, open-ended environments. Scale buildings, mount horses, blend in with crowds. Do whatever it takes to achieve your objectives.
  • Relive the epic times of the Crusades
Assassin’s Creed immerses you in the realistic and historical Holy Land of the 12th century, featuring life-like graphics, ambience and the subtle, yet detailed nuances of a living world.
  • Intense action rooted in reality
Experience heavy action blended with fluid and precise animations. Use a wide range of medieval weapons, and face your enemies in realistic swordfight duels.
  • Next-gen gameplay
The proprietary engine developed from the ground up for the next-gen console allows organic game design featuring open gameplay, intuitive control scheme, realistic interaction with environment and a fluid, yet sharp, combat mechanic.

Assassin's Creed review

By DaveBMF posted 28th April

Assassin's Creed is a polished and attractive game. It is also challenging and I found it took away to get accustomed to using the keys properly. It provides a rewarding game experience with a complex and interesting world, story and premise. Although the missions are repetitive and even tedious at times, this game should not be missed, especially if you plan on completing the series, which is a landmark in game development.

Assassin's Creed review

By GGMarky posted 28th April

The Assassin's Creed series' story line is one I particularly like. That said, the first game in the series isn't as capable as it could be. While the tale of Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed 2 is a character driven dramatic piece, Altair is a pretty uninteresting and undeveloped guy.

The game sees you assassinating 9 targets and the actual assassination is the only bit which stands out and excites, which is a 15 minute section which requires a massive, several hour dragging, repetitive build up to garner enough information before you strike. This game is the genesis for a great series and the storyline, however sparse, still builds on important elements which follow.

Ultimately, Assassin's Creed's first title is good, but not great. Unless you're a fan of the series, I wouldn't recommend this.

A grand game, while not all it was advertised to be(the future stuff can be a bit jarring), it is a fun game. While it follows a simple format of travel, investigate, and stabby time; this build up is well worth the pay off of the escape. With all the guards in town trying to put sharp things into your person; the escape is very fun regardless of how you handle it, be it fighting or fleeing to safety. While each mission follows this similar setup, its always a rewarding end, even on other playthroughs. Though the build up can feel repetitive, it always pays off. The action is solid, the combat is good, but it slows down if you play safe and stick to countering attacks.

If you play Assassin's Creed for an hour, you will probably think it's a fantastic game. But as Assassin's progresses, its dual storylines and repetitive quests begin to grow tiresome. There are so many great individual elements, but they are lost among the myriad of poor decisions from Ubisoft Montreal. Wasting the big twist on the first five minutes of gameplay is a tremendous mistake, but not nearly as damaging as the ill-conceived assassination investigation quests, which get old fast. The exploration aspects of Assassin's Creed and the combat are both plusses in my book. But those two elements are only a small part of the whole.

In its day it may have been great, but today, (2012) the game mechanics are heavy and not fun. It was a revolutionary title in its day but I find it rather cumbersome. Its a beautiful game, with a fun story. Its just not a fun game to play.

You play in a semi-open world where you must uncover a mystery as a member of the order of assassins and defeat your rival, the templars. The setting and story are beautiful, the epic citys and landscapes are wonderfully rendered and alive with traffic. you truely feel like you are in medieval Syria.

Unfortunately, the sights and sounds are the best features.

The mechanics force you to constantly fight, run or hide. You never get to walk arround and enjoy the sights. Every soldier knows your the enemy and so if you are not hiding, they come for you. This is fun for about 2 minutes, unfortunately, you never get to relax and the encounters are never particularly interesting.

Missions are broken down into 4 different acts. Find a way to get information, by eavesdropping and pickpocketing, approach the target and murder him.

If you choose the correct path to the kill, your assassination attempt will be rewarded with an epic quick time moment. these moments are few and far between.

Most of the time I found myself in endless melee combat against irrelevant clone guards, outside of missions, or trying to get away from/hide from, those same endless wave of guards. They are endless and dull and often you just want to end it.

The game is set up to be controlled through keyboard mouse or controller. i use a wireless 360 controller which the game supports. unfortunately, the buttons it tells you to use are not correctly map and you must always go one step counter clockwise from what is indicated, ie yellow instead of red, blue instead of green. It never becomes second nature.

In shor, this game is not very fun. its beautiful and has its moments but most of the gameplay is repetitive and dull. 360 controllers have mapping issues and playing with mouse and keyboard is not great

.

I finally gave in and bought this in a sale and I can only say how glad I am that I waited.

The story is dull and the characters are clichéd and unlikeable.

The gameplay is quite laborious never really amounting to much leaving me with the feeling I was just randomly pushing buttons.

This game is tedious in the extreme and even exiting the program is a real pain.

Loved it!

I thought the story line was brilliant, graphics on my new windows 8 are lovely as ever, downloaded smoothly, installed smoothly. The support team did an excellent job helping me download the right patches and updates to get it working on windows 8, and yes it does play on the new platform! so have fun being a spy!

The first of the series. If you haven't played it a must have. Not quite as rich as its successors however and very limited. Nevertheless the story is good. As a nostalgic player I quite enjoyed replaing it after all the years.

Since it`s on sale, I bought this game to try it at least for once. Well, even tho it is not my type of game, I might say I like this one.

Nice story (8.5/10), great atmosphere(9/10), decent gameplay(7/10).

A really good way to start the franchise. The controls may be clunky but the experience is sound a great buy for all those budding assassins out there.

this game is addicting. Completing missions is fun, but there's almost just as much fun to be had just jumping from rooftop to rooftop, getting caught, fighting a few guards... The game is sort of a medieval version of Grand Theft Auto, you go around committing crimes, running from guards, and when caught get a red light indicator telling you they are chasing you (or yellow if you break their line of sight) which is reminiscent of the stars in grand theft auto... The fighting can get redundant, as can the horseback riding, also there is a bit too much talking that you can't skip for my taste, all in all a great game though, certainly addictive... I've heard a lot of complaints about it, but I don't understand why, guess its not for everyone...

Assassin's Creed review

By Olismart posted 1st November 2012

A very nice game, containing lots of history, different assassination missions and very realistic graphics. Though compared to the other later games in the franchise it becomes quite boring after a while.

The freerunning and fighting are not yet polished and in the end you'll get caught in lots of big fights that aren't really challenging just tedious plus one you've done the first few chapters you've pretty much done them all, the "wanted system" just gets annoying after a while since everyone's out to get you and you have no way to become anonymous other than complete the quest. A good game with very real graphics and pretty much revolutionary for it's time but Assassin's Creed has just become so much more now then it was when this first game came out.

An absolutely fantastic historical action game, features the crusades era with more than 3 holy land cities to explore, each with it's own charms, missions, landmarks.

story is very interesting but sometimes the repetitive tasks before the main objective in a quest can get somehow boring, still it's not that bad.

Definitely worths buying, very fun and immersive game 9/10

Assassin's Creed review

The game's premise and attempts to capture the setting accurately are certainly interesting. Sadly, it bogs down to boring and easy fighting, not yet polished free running and the story drags too much to keep attention.

First of all, the graphic quality is good. When I first tried it last year, I couldn't believe that was a game published in 2007. Especially when I saw Damascus, I just felt like that was it a couple hundred years ago. Next, you just need to enjoy actions and have no item management which makes the gameplay smooth and enjoyable. Last but not least, the story is of course an interesting and innovative one. A RPG fan with less interest in action game like me still enjoys this a lot.

Assassin's Creed review

By Heretic777 posted 20th March 2012

The video game was amazing. Here are the pros and cons that I saw:

PROS:

1. The outdoor environments are huge and all beautifully detailed. You also get to ride on horseback.

2. The buildings, mosques and churches and other architecture are amazingly realistic and I think these along with #4 below "made" the game. These really made it feel like you were in Jerusalem or Damascus. FREAKING amazing. I think this game is a landmark video game just because of the quality of the graphics for the buildings. Even the golden domes on the mosques shine with the sunlight. The game should get an award for this.

3. You will have many hours of fun because of the swordfights. Every time the player levels up, he acquires new swordfighting and combat skills. This makes combat always interesting and there's always something new to try out on your targets.

4. Both the "Bourne Identity" movies and the new James Bond movies have scenes where the hero has the climb walls and jump from roof to roof all with just his bare hands. In this game, YOU are Jason Bourne doing all that stuff. This and #2 "made" this game. When you're jumping from roof to roof and you're being chased by 12 guards while archers are taking aim at you, the feeling is exhilarating.

5. When you are in a city, you have a lot of freedom about where to go and what to do. It feels like "GTA" with horses and not cars. There is even a meter that indicates how "wanted" you are by the guards.

CONS:

1. The "Save a citizen" quests feel very repetitive after you've done a hundred of them.

2. You cannot swim. If you land in the water, you die. Why? If the hero is able to pull off the roof jumping stunts, why can't he swim?

3. You have to pick the pockets of armed thugs to replenish your knives. There is no assassin's store.

4. There is not enough variety in the dialogue spoken by NPCs. It becomes irritating to hear the same thing said over and over by towncrier-type NPCs.

An absolute gem of a game. Unfortunately the XBox version of this I had got a scratch on the disc but I'm going to triply use this to get the value out of it. The premise is fantastic, the graphics are incredible, the scenery is beautiful and the playability is 100%. Definitely in my top 5 favourite games ever.

By Tokkoutai posted 2nd January 2012

I am very exigent when it comes to gaming, so I rarely give a 5 stars rating to anything. But this is one of the few who deserves that rating. Assassin's Creed is a very, VERY interesting game. Made my mind a GPU fry for some long days. The gaming experience is unique as you play as an assassin from old times. But not just a mindless killer, you do it for the sake of the world, picking on targets who would "supposedly" do bad things. The main story is very good and makes you want to progress faster so you can unveil more details of what is going on. I could say a lot more things about this game and make this review so long that no one would like to read it, so I invite you: buy this game if you like any kind of games you will certainly love this title (and the sequels).

Great game with fluid story and gameplay not to mention graphics. Has some minor glitches with climbing and free-running but not so bad as to inhibit your gameplay.

Assassin's Creed review

By Arc_xD posted 15th November 2011

The game is of course the start of a series, the first of which had problems with repetitive gameplay. The story is very compelling and enjoyable. The game has been much improved since but despite its age it is still a great game to pick up and play for a few hours.

Assassin's Creed review

By catalyst009 posted 13th November 2011

The game has solid combat and fluid free-running action all packed together with still-beautiful aesthetics. However, the storyline drags on until you get to the very end where it will fell like it stops abruptly, and leaves you with more questions than answers. The fact that there are only a handful of mission types only adds to the monotony.

Buy this game if you plan on buying its' sequels (for the story.)

Beginning of great series of games.

A great game that spawned even greater list of games to come. Assassin's Creed is not just a game. It is a combination of top notch storytelling, action, gameplay and sound. This is the experience where a simple term "a computer game" is not enough. It's comparable both to a well written book and blockbuster movie. If you haven't played this game this is your chance. Buy it!

Assassin's Creed review

By Kazeh posted 12th November 2011

For those of you familiar with Ubisoft's Prince of Persia franchise this game improves on the Prince's amazing acrobatic skills with the free running system. You play as Altair, an assassin from the Crusade era and your goal is to drive back the Templars who have invaded the "Holy Land". As far as combat goes you are able to wield a hidden blade which allows you to do stealth assassinations, but you can also fight with swords and daggers. In order to explore the map you have to climb tall structures called viewpoints and observe the land beneath.

The first time you start a game you will not automatically begin playing as Altair, but as a common man named Desmond. Do not be alarmed all is explained in the story.

I've had an enjoyable experience with this game and would recommend it to whoever wants to have a bit of fun in the Medieval Age.

Good but can get repetitive

By wilcoxchar posted 5th August 2011

The medieval setting is great and the graphics for the cities are beautiful, but the missions can get repetitive. The story so far is interesting, although I haven't finished it yet.

Great for a short time fun and action

By Adamastorx posted 22nd July 2011

It's no my kind of game, but I liked it. It's fun for a while, for me it gets boring really quickly, because of the repetitive gampelay. It's a "console kind of game", but it plays well on the PC. The graphics are good, great ambiance, but the cities get dull really fast. For the ones like me that sometimes search for a break in the daily work in a easy and superficial game - and to have a rest from all the Paradox games...

By regario posted 14th December 2010

Great game. I was thinking on going to purchase straight Assassin's Creed 2 while waiting on the release of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. However, when i saw the price, for a mere extra 4c, i'd get the AC 1 + 2 (29.99 for the bundle instead of 29.95 for just AC 2). So I'd recommend you doing the same if you're thinging on getting AC 2.

By Skyff posted 8th August 2010

I had my doubts about this title, because, me being an RPG fanatic, I prefer being able to interact with the environment and control my character's development. I was worried the lack of this would ruin the game for me, but, after staunch recommendations from a friend, I decided to give it a shot regardless, and boy, am I glad I did!

The stunning graphics, excellent presentation, compelling story and engaging combat more than made up for the lack of RPG elements, and, it also made up for the sole flaw of the game: objectives getting repetitive in the second half of the game.

Had I been able to, I would have given this game 4.5 out of 5, rather than a full 5.

This a great game and wonderful. You control your player and can almost do anything in the city. Very addictive and fun to play I highly recommend it. You can also fight amazing sword battles and it is very easiy to play it on computer not complicated at all. You can climb and see the city in an amazing detail. I strongly recommend it for all type of players it is very nice game.

By Dreadjaws posted 29th May 2010

This game is fantastic! The story is interesting, the visuals are wonderful and the cities live unlike in any other open-world game. The open world is almost a character itself actually. Don't listen to those who say the game gets repetitive. That only happens if you let it. With a little imagination and the massive array of tools and abilities at your diposal, you can make sure the game is a new experience in every mission. The only complain I might have is that the ending is too inconclusive, but hey! Assassin's Creed 2 is already for sale!

Assassin's Creed is an interesting third person action game. The game is a great deal of fun for the first three-four missions, and then you realize that you've seen everything the game has to offer, gameplay-wise. For the most part, the game has you doing several of the same tasks over and over for each mission in slightly different setups in the various cities. For me, the only further interest I had was in the storyline; and it's an interesting story, too. If you can catch it on sale again grab it for the story or the beginning entertainment, but don't spring for it at $20.

By Demorde posted 10th June 2009

Assassins Creed is an almost historic third person action game with adventure elements. It features beautiful graphics and unique 'anywhere in the environment' gameplay.

However the actual progression of the game is limited to mainly repeating the same action over and over again to different people and in slightly different places, this leaves the game feeling quite linear and boring at times.

As well, on the PC there are major performance issues, and unless your computer is way above the minimum requirements there will be issues with playing the game.

Over all, it is a pretty game with unique gameplay that is sadly plagued by performance and medicore linearity throughout.
