Aquanox review

By zenfailure posted 4th September 2010

Aquanox is set hundreds of years into the future where a series of disasters have casued humanity to flee to the oceans. You play Emerald "Dead Eye" Flint a mercenary sub pilot who thorugh a gets involved in a mysterious project called Brainfire. This of course is merely the begining as events spiral out of control involving renegade military officers, cannibal cultists and an ancient terror long locked away.

The game is techinically a sequal to Archimedean Dynasty, a game that played out much like an underwater version of Elite/Privateer. Aquanox is very different. It's simplifed both in the number of uppergrades and controls. Aquanox uses the stadnard FPS controls and plays out very much like the Descent series of games.

The graphics, once you turn them up to maxiumum, are very good. Enemey ships as well as freindly ships are easy to recongise, the modesl for the cities and base you explore are well done. Given that the game is set underwater the movement of the subs and torepedos is good.

Sound quality is good. Every weapons has different sound effect and is quite recongnisable by it's audio impact. Music is okay though there only appears to be a few tracks and it can be kind of annoying to listen to after the dozenth time. Voice acting is mostly good. There are a few characters who don't sound convincing but at least everybody appears to be trying thier best.

Mission design is okay though some of them can be annoying because of the lenght. There isn't any in mission save so it can be quite frusting to have to redo the entire mission because you or something you had to protect died towards the middle of the mission. Your wingman are resonable compentent, and immortal, so they can be useful in a fight though you do not have any control over them.

In between missions you have a simple menu bases system which allows you to talk to other characters, mainly about the previous/next mission, buy weapons or subs and fit out you sub.

The plot is okay. It's not particualry original but it mostly makes sense and is coherent.

The game was stable with no crashes or bugs. There where some minor spelling errors and the image of one wingmans appearing whislt another was speaking but these in no way hindered the game.

Overall the game is quite good and well worth picking up if you fancy some Descent style action.

Aquanox review

Aquanox is the sequal to Archimedian Dynasty, and continues in the same spirit. It is a mission based "submarine" game, set in the distant future when everybody lives in underwater cities due to some cataclysm.

Instead of being a slow submarine game, this game plays more like descent - it is an FPS where you can move in any direction, even straight up and down. The gameplay is quite entertaining, and reasonably challenging. The plot is fairly well down, but the voice acting is the worst I have ever heard in any game.

The graphics are actually very good, especially for a game this age, and give a good feel of being underwater.

Overall, a fun shooting game that plays a little differently, but turn the sound off when people are talking.
