Is this Sea Dogs III or IV? The various licensing and name changes aside, it's yet another iteration of the RPG/Pirate/Sailing sim. This time out, you have a choice between two characters to start with. You can elect to serve a nation from the get go, or a freebooter (as always, the choice merely dictates your beginning relations. It is more than possible to switch sides as much as you wish throughout the game). There's a wealth of setup options too, from weather intensity to town development speeds. At the beginning, you're given half a map and a quest to find the other half, and that's it. You can opt to pursue the story right away, or perhaps instead indulge in some piracy, trading or running errands for one of the governors. Through the course of your adventures you can buy or capture a number of vessels, each of which can be upgraded in several areas. You will recruit officers who improve your ship, trading or fighting capabilities and can be developed in the same way as your main character, provided you can keep them loyal. Combat is well handled, between ships it's the old sail and bombard before closing to board. Upon boarding (or if you pick a fight in a town) combat switches to third person sword fighting whereupon you get a number of attacks or defences to use. Niggles are mainly minor. The free form nature means it can often be tricky to work out how to progress next, this is definitely not a game for those who prefer more directed play. Combat AI can be a bit iffy, with boarding actions often devolving into farce as both sides get stuck on scenery. Side quests are rather unimaginative, being almost entirely deliveries or escort missions. That said however the game is a lot of fun. If you ever played Sid Meier's Pirates and wished you could stand on the deck while you pounded the Spanish Treasure fleet then you're sure to get some enjoyment out of this game.

nice graphics, but not a lot of adventure. all quests are like 'go from a to b and get this or deliver that'.
