Ankh 3: Battle of the Gods review

By Garfboy posted 21st October 2012

The graphics are much better than the 2nd game, but the 'funny' dialogue and music is unbearable - it pretty much fails completely. It tries to be like Tales of Monkey Island or Jolly Roger, but simply isn't funny. Don't waste your time on the Ankh series.

In the third games of this interesting series, your faithful Assil (the main character) is battling enemies in ancient Cairo. All our old friends are still there, including Thara, a beautiful, sharp-tongued girl; and the Ankh, an Egyptian artifact that has suddenly become sentient.

As in the previous 2 games, the main strengths are the amable 3D cartoon graphics, over-the-top characters, third person perspective, point-and-click interface, absurdist humor, and quirky inventory challenges.

This game is highly recommended if you’ve already played and enjoyed the first two games, or if you like odd humor in a point-and-click adventure. For everybody else, there are probably better games out there.

Ankh 3: Battle of the Gods review

I've said this in other reviews, but it needs to be said here, too. Telltale isn't the only good developer for adventure games. There are several that come out of Europe, particularly Germany, that most people here don't know about. For example, Ceville and the Ankh games.

Like those games, Ankh 3 has great humor, surprisingly high production values (better looking, of course, than Ankh 2) and it's a traditional point and click game. The puzzles generally have a logic to them that can be figured out. Personally, I'm open to using walkthroughs for this genre. Part of the experience is the story. But I try not to, and Ankh 3 is generally straightforward enough that you don't have to.

The dialogue is cute, often funny and well written. I'm keeping an eye on the developer, Deck13, who also made Jack Keane (probably my next adventure game). If you're a fan of the genre, I recommend trying this series.
