GAME SUMMARY

Alan Wake

Rating: 4.4 (96 votes cast)

When the wife of the best-selling writer Alan Wake disappears on their vacation, his search turns up pages from a thriller he doesn’t even remember writing. A Dark Presence stalks the small town of Bright Falls, pushing Wake to the brink of sanity in his fight to unravel the mystery and save his love.

Presented in the style of a TV series, Alan Wake features the trademark Remedy storytelling and pulse-pounding action sequences. As players dive deeper and deeper into the mystery, they’ll face overwhelming odds, plot twists, and cliffhangers. It’s only by mastering the Fight With Light combat mechanic that they can stay one step ahead of the darkness that spreads across Bright Falls.

With the body of an action game and the mind of a psychological thriller, Alan Wake’s intense atmosphere, deep and multilayered story, and exceptionally tense combat sequences provide players with an entertaining and original gaming experience.

Favorite Action Thriller and Horror Game IMO!

By bugbite250 posted 9th March

The storyline is amazing! I love the action in this game! It's not your ordinary 3rd person shooter game. It might feel weird playing someone who shoots light at enemies, but it totally works! You should definitely play this game! 5/5 Stars. :3

Splendid game, creates a fantastic tense atmosphere with clever mechanics in the gameplay. The unfolding mystery definitely kept me engaged and wanting to find out what would happen next. There are limited actions available to you during the game, which adds to the tension. I found the difficulty to be quite balanced and not too overwhelming.

This is an awesome game with a captivating story line. One of the great horror games in it's time!

Though I enjoyed both the characters and the plot I often found myself somewhat bored by the action sequences (the driving portions felt especially pointless). I would have preferred a game which spent a bit more time on building menace and a bit less time hurling repetitive enemies at me. It ended up feeling like a chore to me to get to the next place I could investigate.

A nice attempt at Survival Horror, but I just couldn't enjoy it. The main issue I had was with the controls. Maybe it works better on a Console, but with a Mouse/Keyboard, Mr. Wake flopped around like a dying fish. The use of light as a weapon sounded neat at first, but just seemed to contrived after awhile. Not particularly scary, either. Eh, maybe I'm just getting jaded in my old age.

Alan Wake is a very interesting game, but it suffers from some serious flaws.

The overwhelming majority of the praise I have for it concerns the story. It's fantastic! It feels like a Stephen King novel - particularly reminiscent of "Secret Window" and "The Dark Half" - mixed with the TV show Twin Peaks. Your character is an author who has recently been suffering from writer's block and decides to vacation with his wife. When she goes missing, he is thrown into a nightmarish scenario and hunted by shadows as he desperately searches for her. It's very engrossing from start to finish, and the story is broken up into episodes and presented like a TV show, complete with recap sequences ("Previously, on Alan Wake...").

It's just awesome.

Unfortunately I don't feel as good about the actual gameplay. The big mechanic is basically to fight the darkness with light, which entails using your flashlight (which gobbles batteries at a truly unbelievable speed) and making mad dashes to brightly-lit safe havens. While there's nothing wrong with this mechanic, the premise wears thin in fairly short order and the combat and exploration begins to feel repetitive. Like a chore, even.

I found that I was merely dragging myself from one objective to the next, hoping for some more plot exposition because I loved the story, but the gameplay just wasn't that fun.

I definitely think you should give Alan Wake a fair chance if you're up for a great story, but don't expect an innovative and exciting shooter experience. It's certainly no Max Payne in that sense!

Great Story combined with fantastic Characters and incredible atmosphere but "Alan Wake" lacks good gameplay and a balanced difficulty setting.

You will find yourself in tiny areas with a ton of enemys coming from all sides, "Alan Wake" is frustrating at times and could have been far better. Its still a fantastic interactiv movie but nothing compared to Remedys previous "Max Payne" games.

Excellent game. For the first 2 or 3 hours, I felt bored and thought the gameplay was so repetitive. But then when the stories went on, pieces came together and became interesting. The atmosphere became more and more creepy. It really provided an intense and horrifying gameplay experience and kept me interested in knowing what will come next. Recommended.

After a long wait, the masterpiece of Remedy arrives on our computers. This game is a sort of tribute to the world of publishing, film, television and even music, suggesting ideas for readings, listenings and visions.

Alan Wake proves that videogames are a mature form of entertainement and can create titles that combine beautiful plots with treated game mechanics, although unfortunately no major innovations. In fact the game suffers slightly the long process of development, but it remains an experience that cannot be missed for any true fan of videogames, imho.

The terrifying atmosphere and the beautiful musics and landscapes will remain in my memory for a long time.

Highly recommended.

Very intense game, with great atmosphere and intriguing story.

Graphic and music are gorgeous and also perfectly blends with the style of the game.

Nice shooting action, it's enjoyable but don't expect anything like Resident Evil type.

Highly recommended if you like horror story

Light is the only ally, any weapon that can produce light is a powerful weapon. Both people and objects possessed by the darkness weakened by the presence of light.

The scenario of the game is Bright Falls, located on U.S. Pacific coast. Landscapes are a well developed level of detail, especially the PC version. Some effects with the sounds of ambience, make you feel the dark presence nearby.

The narrative of events and thoughts of Alan Wake, wake causes increasing interest in the development of the plot. The structure of the game that unfolds in episodes, is similar to a TV series.

It has cultural references, and the words of Stephen King's The Shining, Cthulhu Mythos and the Lord of the Rings.

Alan Wake - puts you in the middle of something beautifully terrifying

This game made my friends gather around a computer and beg me to continue to play for hours (!), because they wanted to know how the storyline develops. Yes, it is that fascinating. And all wrapped up in very nice graphics too. And the pace of the game is also something worth mentioning. Like in a good horror movie you have sequences with thrill and action and others when you believe all is fine....for now....and then - BAM - things get pretty fast pretty ugly. The characters are believable and entertaining. The sound is good too. It simply fits together. You can play through the game pretty fast, i'd say in about 6 hours, if you give it a try on easy difficulty and rush through the levels. Or you can try to collect all the goodies, see all implemented tv shows, listen to all radio broadcasts....collect this and that. Well it pleases the achiever type of player as well as the one with little time on his hand who is just looking for the fast enterainment inbetween work and family.

The only two things that made me think could have been improved is:

1. The action sequences take place too often in places that look alike. And the strategy you got to survive doesnt change much over the game. So sometimes it feels slightly repetetive.

2. No alternate endings. So the replayability is not as high as it could be. I bet everybody would give this game another whirl on a higher difficulty if he could give the story another spin. But sadly replaying the game may just help you to understand the fixed storyline a bit better (Which is at times confusing - in a good way).

So to conclude. I had lots of fun with this game. Alan Wake is worth the full price and on sale it is simply a steal! Dont miss it.

I really like the start of the game, it puts you right were you should be. The scenery is nicley done and the grafics is pretty good. If you like this kind of mystery type game Alan Wake will do the job. I have played Max Payne and can say that Remedy has done a great job from the first Max.

I compare this game to Heavy rain alot which i liked allot, and i beleve that Alan Wake can stand up to the test.

The downside might be the controls, it fells like it is made for the Xbox and thats a real shame. Be sure to have a QR reader with you when you play.
