Air Raid: This Is Not a Drill! review

By CyberPuppet posted 10th August 2011

Air Raid is an arcade defense shooter, or at least it attempts to be one. Unfortunately it executes this formula so poorly that the whole game ends up just feeling boring and repetitive.

It's biggest flaw would be that it limits your ammo. Now in most arcade shooters you have a weaker unlimited weapon to blast most of the enemies and some special weapons to help you in tight spots. In Air Raid you have your main gun that which too little ammo than you would want for all the moving targets you have to deal with and a few homing missiles(why are these in a WW2 game?). The main gun fires slow shots which makes it a pain to try to hit moving targets especially when you risk running out of ammo. Health is also an issue as shooting down planes will often result in them crashing into you causing you to lose health and the camera to shake making it hard to fire on other enemies. By pressing F9 and typing "set bullet 1000" and "god" you can get all the ammo and health you want. But even with the freedom from ammo restrictions, the enemies seem very repetitive and are not satisfying to shoot down.

The visuals and sound are not much better. Environments are repeated and everything is as stiff as a board. Your fellow gunmen seem more content at staring at the horizon than defending the ship. The colors are bland and will make you swear you accidentally launched the game in 256 color mode. The sound effects sound horribly compressed and the background sounds play even when nothing is happening. For example you can hear the sound of bullets hitting the metal panels of your ship even if there are no planes around to shoot at you.

If it wasn't on sale for pocket change I wouldn't have tried it. Even at a lower price it is not worth it.

This is a classic shooter. Easy and cheap to enjoy. It's not good in screen quality at first. Then I setup the screen resolution to fit my 1920x1080 monitor. After the setup, it's wonderful. Rally a good shooter game to enjoy. I do suggest the game maker should detect the screen resolution automatically.

It's an arcade shooter. It's cheap, so expect to get what you pay for. Not bad if your into point defense stuff ( think Beachhead). My biggest complaint is the lack of window mode or scaling up the graphics engine to suit a dual monitor setup.

Yes I know it is cheap. It's not cheap enough -- the game has essentially one mode and badly coded multiplayer -- of course it's a cheap and shoddy arcade game but surely we expect a bit more from our games than that? You just shoot bullets (or missiles -- creative!) at planes until you run out or die.

Pro tip: go to a flash game site and play literally the same thing for free.

I used to play dozens of mindless shoot 'em ups i like these kind of games. this one is ok for 27 cents. althoughi still don't understand how on earth a rim-7 missile appeared on a ww2 game. basicly you have a cannon and you shoot at different kind of planes and boats. if you run out of ammo game over if your ship gets destroyed game over pure and simple. it reminds me of some games i played on my snes when i was a kid. if you like to have a little taste of what old games were like or you just missed the good old days this game will get the job done don't expect anything else though. plus, for only 27 cents it's a bargain.

Alright for 27 cents!

Ok, straight off Im going to say, this is a game that belongs in a arcade somewhere in a lazerzone or something for the following reasons.

You start off on your 40mm cannon on a ship. Then all of sudden planes start comming out of nowhere and sirens go off. You look around at your fellow guys arming the other 40mm cannons, and guess what they do?

Nothing. They don't shoot at all they just stare out into the ocean.

So what you have to do is shoot down 20 or so enemy planes on your own, your weapons are a 40mm cannon and a futuristic homing missile that somehow appeared during WW2.

There is very little variation in it. Its the same every mission, with the occasional different enemy. And the graphics are bad too.

Not really worth your money.

Pros -

Arcade that is infinite plays for 27 cents instead of 25 cents for 1 play like on a normal arcade

Blowing up mindless enemies that come from different angles

Cons -

Very repetitive

Unrealistic

Graphics are terrible

friendly cannons next to you do nothing

Trust me better save up your bluecoins and buy something better. Trust me there are ALOT of great economic games on gamersgate but this isn't one of them.
