GAME SUMMARY

Armada 2526 Gold Edition

Rating: 3.8 (26 votes cast)

Armada 2526 Gold combines the popular space opera Armada 2526 with its Supernova expansion in one stand alone package. You guide your race from its first interstellar journeys, until it becomes a mighty galactic empire. Along the way, you'll explore the galaxy, conduct research, diplomacy and trade, found new colonies, maneuver mighty star fleets, and fight epic battles.

Although the game is complex, and the possible strategies endless, powerful help and advisor features, help you get up to speed quickly. Unlike many games in this genre, Armada 2526 focuses on providing a game that can be finished in a reasonable time, and emphasizes battle and strategy over economic micro-management.

The game consists of two sections. The Star Map is where you run your empire: manage your colonies, deploy your fleets, do research, and conduct diplomacy. It uses a turn based system, so you can take as long as you wish to plan your actions. However, once battle is joined, you switch to the battle module and fight it out in a real-time 3D system that brings to life the beauty and visceral carnage of space combat.

Features

  • Turn based star map for moving fleets, managing colonies, performing research, and conducting diplomacy

One of the best 4x games of all times

By loremaster3988 posted 25th December 2012

Great game! One of the best 4x games of all times. It reminds me of the Born of the Federation. Better than Master of Orion 2 and way way better than Galactic Civilization 2! It is turn based not real time, which is a very good thing for me, and you have total control of everything in your empire if you want. The User Interface is very intuitive and there is a very good tutorial that will introduce you to the game.

Very disappointed with this game.

Rubbish.

Fleet management was terrible, battles were terrible.

I enjoy this genre and was expecting a lot better given the reviews I read here on GG. Don’t be fooled, this game is a joke. Better off with Master of Orion 2 (not 3 however) or Sword of the Stars 1 (not 2 though – not yet anyway).

Hope I save someone from wasting some money.

Armada 2526 Gold Edition review

Armada 2526 is a lightweight but fairly standard space empire builder in the same vein as Galactic Civilizations and Master of Orion. What it does, it does fairly well. There isn't too much to complain about unless you are one of those players who enjoys high levels of micro-management and colony/ship customization which is why this game is classified as "lightweight".

The game itself has a fairly good pace and all of the features players are used to:

Diplomacy

Research

Colony building

Fleet construction

Space battles

Trade

The game is also fairly easy to get into once you learn the controls (which is not hard, it's just different than other space empire builders). The graphics are not out to win any revolutionary awards but they're not so low-tech that it's distracting. The sound effects and quality are slightly above average but again, nothing to write home about.

The real strength of this game is the somewhat faster pace of play and streamlined interface. Most interfaces are no deeper than 3 elements so getting around is pretty simple. With that said, the tutorial is a must since not all of the actions are intuitive enough to figure out right away. The space battles are a mix of Sword of the Stars meets Galactic Civilizations in that it is a 2d field (around a 3d planet) but ship movement and fleet formations can be customized and aren't static sprites as well as having a bit more animation detail than your standard 2d fare.

All in all, this game isn't going to break any new ground and for fans of a more hardcore empire builder, there is probably enough missing that you won't overly enjoy it. With that said, for those who love empire builders but just want to play and not have to manage every little aspect of the universe, this is a great compromise.
